Well, after fighting all day to get back into the blog's working system, I have decided to make the big switch. Lord knows what it will do to the layout, not to mention the content. I expect it will be a bear. We shall see.

The problem is that Yahoo, the host, and Movable Type, the blog software, parted ways earlier this month, which meant that Yahoo would no longer support MT. I ignored it, figuring I could go my merry way with MT. Then I axed TypePad as the comment vetter and, suddenly, I couldn't get back into MT to work my magic. Come to find out that TP owns MT. Good grief, how did I miss that? TP said they couldn't help. MT tried to pass the buck to Yahoo. I kept pressing MT. It took six hours but they finally found a solution. I'll be making the switch as soon as I can. More on that when it's ready to go down.

The flamboyant lawyer-coach, whose QBs put up high-flying numbers but never seem to make it in the NFL, claims to have a doctor's okay for making that player stand in a closet for two hours. Hardly matters that the player had a mild concussion or that his daddy is a big shot television talking head. Punitive "coaching" doesn't sell anywhere. Not even on the High Plains. At least not when you get caught. Adios, coach.

UPDATE: Indeed, he sued and the university fired him. No surprises here. Said Chancellor Kent Hance on ESPN: "When you sue your boss, it's not going to turn out well." Heh.

It wasn't enough that their football team had to fumble its way to embarrassment the other night against Georgia. Now I discover they're trying to stop global warming by proposing to convert farmland to forests.

Yep. Well, I guess to them it makes sense. After all, their meteorology department (the only one in Texas that graduates weather warriors) is wholly in the bag with AGW. So it figures other Aggie researchers would be looking for solutions. But eliminating farmland? That seems a little extreme. The ag industry lobby apparently is not amused and has set Barry's ag secretary to backfilling. He'll turn this sucker around. You betcha.

Looping and swooping at the end.

More Dionysian than his late grandfather's (which he has never seen) which was rather severe. Moreso even than mine ever was, even at his age. (Years ago I lost the flourish and went with a quick, neat signature that could be done in a hurry.) Interesting development, this. Or maybe it's just that the Y on the end of the surname encourages a loop and a swoop.

That's how our OCS class president-for-life, Claude Cooper, is feeling after several days without power at his rural home in the North Carolina mountains. First the blizzard buried them, then an ice storm blew in and down came the power lines.

He's emailing our happy group via his Blackberry on an unknown somebody's stray wireless signal and recharging periodically at a child's home a few miles away where power has been restored. Fortunately, he has a fireplace and plenty of wood. And a gas grill to cook and boil water on. It not being the height of summer, even the refrigerated foodstuffs may be able to hold out a while longer.

UPDATE: After 3.5 days, the power was restored, and Claude is kicking himself, once again, for failing to follow-through on his old plan to invest in an emergency propane generator. Still happy, however, to live out in the quiet boonies with the deers and the bears.

Still, it's peanuts compared to the rich-boy PantyBomber, so consumed by his submission to Allah that he wanted to take 289 others with him into martyrdom.

Jack McDevitt is one fine reason to keep reading science fiction. His future world is compelling and while short of the hard scifi I usually prefer, his tales are nevertheless, as Stephen King says in a blurb, "riveting."

This one fits the mold. It's a multiple-murder mystery set in a future where starships are so common that rich people have their own starship yachts. It's an alien-contact story, but I won't give away any of the other details. It drags a little at times, but you can always feel that the promise of the ride is just down the trail a ways. And the ending doesn't disappoint. Give it a try, for the characters and the worlds he creates, as he puts it, in a universe of winds and echoes.

Nobody with any knowledge of Texas politics is taking Democrat Farouk Shami's run for governor seriously. For one thing his incumbent opponent, Republican Rick Perry, is too popular. For another, well, when was the last time Texas had an Arab-American Muslim governor? Exactly never.

On the other hand, Shami has ten million dollars of his own money to invest in his campaign. Consequently he's getting a lot of media, free and otherwise. They all quote him saying he's from Palestine, wherever that is. It's not the Texas Palestine. Apparently he's from the West Bank, though no one is sure because he doesn't call it that.

He tells the American Task Force for Palestine, which seems to think he's a Muslim though some Texans think he's a Quaker, that he's for peace and love and equality in the Middle East. Debbie Schlussel thinks he's a clandestine Jihadi in an anti-Semitic package. She cites as partial evidence this column he wrote two years ago for the Houston Chronicle in which he implies that the nasty Israelis are forcing the poor Palestinians to ration water "while Jewish settlers cultivate lush lawns and fill their swimming pools." That's libel enough for me to be glad that Shami's chance of election is exactly nil.

UPDATE: The daily's Ken Herman did a job on Shami: "The downtrodden minority/victim role is particularly unattractive on a guy who lives in a 24,585-square-foot-home like Shami does."
