The pirate walks the plank

Something tells me we've seen the last of Mike "The Pirate" Leach. The flamboyant lawyer-coach, whose QBs put up high-flying numbers but never seem to make it in the NFL, claims to have a doctor's okay for making that player stand in a closet for two hours. Hardly matters that the player had a mild concussion or that his daddy is a big shot television talking head. Punitive "coaching" doesn't sell anywhere. Not even on the High Plains. At least not when you get caught. Adios, coach.

UPDATE:  Indeed, he sued and the university fired him. No surprises here. Said Chancellor Kent Hance on ESPN: "When you sue your boss, it's not going to turn out well." Heh.

Colt to win the Heisman?

I wouldn't have thought so, after an undistinguished season--other than helping get his team in the championships. But after his three awards last night--the Maxwell, the Davey O'Brien, and the Walter Camp--it certainly looks like The Tuscola Kid is about to walk off with the biggie, as well. On the other hand, Vince also won the Maxwell, but didn't get the stiff-arm statue.

UPDATE:  Alabama's RB Mark Ingram won it. Now he should get ready to meet the Texas defense. Heh.

Longhorns vs Huskers

Can't help believing, going into this game, that it will be a Horns victory. Like to see Colt have some impressive plays to counter what Mark Ingram did against Florida. We shall see.

UPDATE: Mid-3rd quarter. I guess Colt can kiss the Heisman goodbye. He's thrown two interceptions and been sacked a bunch of times. Still, at 10-6, Texas has a chance to win it. This is old-time, smashmouth football, a low-scoring, defensive struggle. So far, and looks to stay that way.

FINAL:  Husker fans will be upset, like their coaches were. Been a while since the Horns won a heartstopper like this one, 13-12. Champions find a way, they say. As for the Heisman, I hear they don't give them to defensive tackles. But they should give one to Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh.

Horns vs Ags

Been an exciting first half. What looked at first glance to be a defensive struggle has become an offensive one instead. So we go into the half with Texas up 28-21. Texas already has almost four hundred yards of total offense. Colt's really puttin' on a show, with deep passes, a long run for a TD and a good pooch punt. Gunnin' for that Heisman?

UPDATE:  Texas pulls out a tough victory 49-39 in a tit-for-tat contest in which both teams combined for more than a thousand yards of total offense. These in-state grudge games can be murder. This was a wild one.

Ah, the smell of drycleaning in the morning. We're going to miss seeing the Aggie Band this year, as they will not be marching up Congress Avenue to the Capitol since Thursday's game is in College Station. Pity, we rather enjoy seeing the latest members of the 9/11 generation. Senior boots and all.

Vince is back

The 2005 champion Longhorn was back tonight when the Titans took down Houston 20 to 17. VY's shifty running on third downs for consecutive first downs, and his long passes were spectacular. That, combined with the determined rushing of RB Chris Johnson, gave the Titans an electric combo. Not to mention kicker Rob Brionas' big leg. Vince is now 4-0 as the Titans' starter with, surely, more team wins to come.

Tuscola Kid: Winningest College QB

Texas QB Colt McCoy, leading a 51-20 thumping of Kansas last night, became the winningest quarterback in college football history. The Horns will play Nebraska for the Big Twelve title. And, almost certainly, play the winner of the SEC title for the National Championship. Quite a night.

Is Vince back? Maybe, maybe not

After the Titans' second third consecutive win Sunday:

"Pairing Chris Johnson and Vince Young in the same backfield is turning into a very potent combination." -- Associated Press

"Vince Young is still Vince Young — an inconsistent performer who is at best a second-string quarterback in the NFL." -- Scout.com

Anyhow, it's nice to see them talking about you again, VY. Good luck.

TCU runs over Utah, 55-28

I caught the first half of the Texas-Baylor game, until the Horns had forty points. Baylor has always been the doormat of the Big Twelve and this year, despite a promising young QB (until he was injured) was no exception. So I waited for and watched and enjoyed the Texas Christian and Utah game. Very evenly matched, though you wouldn't know it from the final score. Unbeaten TCU was just sooo much better. Their new uniforms are cool, too. I hope they get a BCS bowl this year. They certainly deserve it.

Texas 35, Central Florida 3

Appropriate score at the end doesn't reflect the slow start of the Longhorns offense in the first half that had UCF ahead 3 to 0 at the end of the first quarter. That was incredible, given the way Texas jumped out to 21 points in the first quarter against OK State, a much better team than U. of Central Florida.

I could see the Horns dropping to third in the BCS rankings tomorrow, especially if Alabama beats LSU. In fact, in that scenario, I could see Alabama jumping to first. Since Florida is only playing Vanderbilt, the SEC's doormat. With the Iowa loss, however, it seems the Horns are still on track for Pasadena.

Texas 41, Oklahoma State 14

Fun tonight dividing time between watching Texas whip OK State and passing out candy to the little goblins. Got a few high school kids this year, but mainly little ones accompanied by their parents. Mr. B. and two of his friends went off in costume with Mrs. C. to canvas the neighbood and, as usual, came back with a disgraceful amount of candy. It will be stale by January, their eyes always bigger than their stomachs. Almost too old for this anymore, they are.

Texas 41, Missouri 7

Best part of this blowout was watching the rejuvenated Tuscola Kid's almost flawless passing and occasional good running against a 4-2 team while Bama almost lost to 3-3 Tennessee and Florida struggled with 3-4 Mississippi State. I'm sure the BCS computers won't notice, however.

KVET FM's good announcing made the Texas game, as always. Craig Way, "the Voice of the Longhorns" and his sidekicks aren't homers but give equal measure to both teams and all of the players. Much more complete than the half-witted commentating on ABC. The overpaid network guys never seem to know enough to actually report the game-in-progress but just keep repeating the same conventional wisdom over and over again. But this ESPN guy isn't bad.

Texas-OU

Should be quite a game this morning. Just hope the Longhorns don't start off slow like they've done a couple of times this year. Dig a hole deep enough and they might not get out of it. Especially with WR Ryan Broyles back in the Zero U lineup.

Tickled to learn from the daily that the land grabber's calm QB Sam Bradford, last year's Heisman winner, plays the cello. Surely a first for a college quarterback. And what's with Colt wearing glasses now? Hope Sam doesn't get hurt again, but a lot of QB hurries on him from Sergio Kindle and Sam Acho would be good. Go get'em, Colt!

Hook'em and, uh, OU sucks.

UPDATE:  OU 6, TX 3 at the half. Sorry to see Sam reinjure his shoulder early in the first quarter. But OU defense is keeping TX from a touchdown. Both have fumbled twice. Penalties all over. According to my favorite announcers at KVET-FM, it's the lowest-scoring first half of the rivalry.

FINAL: Texas wins a grinding game 16-13. Not a pretty one for Colt or Shipley, and way too many play-hindering penalties. But the defense was key, the running game was huge and it's nice to see the win.

Texas 34, Texas Tech 24

Not the prettiest Texas win I ever saw, but it will have to do. Tech, as always, was a tough customer. The Leach bomber squadron's new QB Taylor Potts is almost as good as Graham Harrell was last year. Fortunately for Texas, Potts does not have WR Michael Crabtree. Colt looked pretty shaky for most of the game. Turns out he was sick earlier in the week. He certainly showed no sign of a serious Heisman campaign, but we have a long way to go yet. The defense, however, played great. RB Tre' Newton was fun to watch.

Oklahoma's Sam Bradford

I was truly sorry to see Bradford injured but I was cautiously delighted to see the Sooners lose to BYU. Even before their star QB took his shoulder injury they looked to be struggling. And the main reason he was hit hard enough to be injured was that his offensive line wasn't protecting him as well as they did last year.

Bradford may be out for two to six weeks. Can they win without him? Maybe. Landry Jones, his backup, looked pretty good. A delay-of-game call on a crucial play was the only apparent thing that kept him from winning it. It would be a good thing for Texas not to have to face a Bradford-led OU for the Red River Shootout. But it might damage Texas' chances for a national title, if their strength-of-schedule is further diminished by a weakened Oklahoma. And it's also scary. The same thing, after all, could happen to Colt McCoy.

Everything is looking good this season for Texas, with AP ranking the guys No. 2 in its pre-season poll. The bookies also are in line. Now. All, that is, except their wimpy non-conference schedule. Too many creampuffs, which could come back to haunt them when strength-of-schedule considerations come into play. The "toughest" apparently will be, wait for it, Wyoming. Geez Louise.

Big Game Bob fouls out

I'm not among those who think that Oklahoma's loss to Florida means Texas ought to be No. 1. No, Florida is No. 1, and plainly deserves to be, after figuring out how to get past the Sooners defense. The one the Big Twelve wasn't supposed to have, eh? That's the way it is under the current BCS system, which is the only system we've got.

Utah done good, but they play in a weak league. USC also performed, at least in its bowl game, if you can call beating Penn State a big deal. The Pac 10, like the Big Ten, sucked during the regular season. And Texas used another one of its trademark come-from-behind, last-two-minutes touchdown drives to get by a really good Ohio State defense. Then smothered OSU's schizophrenic offense for the win.

Maybe Texas should have played in the title game, instead of Oklahoma, but the Big Twelve's method of tie-breaking is as old as the conference and sent the Sooners there, instead. Pity Big Game Bob couldn't pull it off. Again. He really should have left Sam Bradford alone instead of changing the plays before practically every Oklahoma snap. As a result, there was none of the hurryup that had worked so well for the Sooner offense during the regular season. Once again, BGB made the Big Twelve look bad. Ah, well, there's always next season when, I'll bet, it'll be the Big Twelve vs the SEC once again. Get used to it.

UPDATE: AP, dishonest in national politics reporting and so most else, rolls over and plays dead to rank Utah and USC higher than Texas. What a joke. Not that I particularly care, frankly. Bowls are money and Utah provided a more exciting game and beat a team of note. But USC? Same old, same old East and West  coast bias. Bleh.

Sore losers

Was listening to Hugh Hewitt on PJTV a while ago and finally realized something about the Fiesta Bowl outcome. Hewitt is an Ohio State alum. He said his team "was robbed" of the victory. Suddenly it clicked. I'd been wondering why my old OCS chums who usually crow about their Ohio State team had been utterly mum since the game ended Monday night. I'll bet they also feel robbed.

I had previously seen an ESPN clip where the pretty New York face claimed Ohio State had "dominated the game." Well, if they were so dominate why did they only put up six points in the first half? Definitely not dominant in the third quarter when the Texas no-huddle, hurryup offense had OSU's defenders running ragged. And obviously not the fourth quarter when Texas won the game. Sore losers these Big Ten fans. No surprise there. I've noticed it before. I laugh. What a bunch of dorks. That's twice in three meets Texas has beaten the overrated OSU. What can you expect from a team named for a useless nut?

UPDATE: The who's No. 1 argument seems silly to me, but this is a good one. Although, as expected, even the commenters disagree

Texas vs Ohio State

"Crack them Nuts," was the message on Mr. B.'s barber's T-shirt when he got his haircut Saturday. But the daily's sportswriters seem a little more circumspect in this morning's Fiesta Bowl edition. Burnt Orange Nation is more upbeat and still has the best gametime forum. We're going to find out what's what at 7 p.m. It will only be the third meeting of the Horns-Buckeyes. They split the other two.

UPDATE: 6-3 Ohio State at the half. Texas will get the ball to start the second half but, so far, their offense is struggling against probably the best defense they've seen all year. Fortunately the Texas defense is holding its own, as well. Good game, but I don't have a good feeling about this.

FINAL: Texas wins 24-21. Very satisfying, considering Ohio State played hard to the end. What a year for the Tuscola Kid, whom OSU beat in 2006, and now wins his second crack at the Buckeyes.

Cotton Bowl-bound

The first time I saw Jeven Snead in person was when Mr. Boy's cub scout troop was invited to a Longhorns football practice back in 2006. Snead looked taller than Colt McCoy, to whom JS seemed doomed to play backup forever, and I got the feeling that, in line with the rumors of the time, he wouldn't be satisfied with that for long. So I was not surprised when he jumped ship for Ole Miss. Nor, given his high school performance in Stephenville, that he's done well there.

Longhorns vs Buckeyes

Army buddy Chuck Adams already is intoning the faded glories of his alma mater's football team in predicting a fight with Texas at the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 5. He's setting up the straw men:

"...speaking of winning national titles, the Buckeyes were there in 2002...and 1970...1968...1961 [my freshman year]...1957...and 1942. Not too shabby, methinks..."

Too bad the Buckeyes can't bring any of those teams to Glendale, Chuck. They'll have to make do with this season's No. 10 version.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, crunch

So Texas, which should have played for the Big Twelve title, doesn't get to play for the BCS title, despite having a better loss than Florida and a better win than Oklahoma, which Texas also beat by ten points. Just one point shy of the eleven that Florida put up on Alabama.

Instead, Texas gets a bowl (the Fiesta) to play 10th-ranked Ohio State. Huh? It would be more logical for Texas to play 4th-ranked Alabama--as in the top two play each other, then the next two and the next two and so on. But that's not the way corporate college football wants it: no split title, thank you.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech, which rode the No. 1 ranking for weeks, is unfairly excluded from a BCS bowl altogether. And, once again--and I'm happy to see the daily's Kirk Bohls join me in decrying this--a power team (Oklahoma) is shamelessly rewarded for humiliating an outclassed opponent (Missouri) by running up the score, 62-21. Wherever this game of college football is headed, it doesn't look good.

Enjoy the Beat-By-Texas Bowl

That was the banner flown around last night's Big Twelve title game before Oklahoma crushed Missouri 62-21. Not only true, but it's also a claim that the other loser of the three-way tie, Texas Tech, cannot make. Nevertheless, for the honor of the Big Twelve, I hope Bradford & Co. beat the Gators. Texas shut out of Kansas City

Two teams Texas beat, Oklahoma and Missouri, will play for the Big Twelve championship, and Zero U goes on to the BCS one in Miami. Blame the BCS computers. I suppose we could also blame the Ags for not being ranked? Yeah, that might work.

MORE:  Our only hope for Miami now, it seems, is for the Okies to lose to Mizzou. Not much hope.

BCS mess

Or BCS mix. Anyhow. Nice to see Baylor thrashing Texas Tech 28-14 28-21 at the end of the third quarter in Lubbock. Baylor winning would give the Longhorns a shot at the Big Twelve championship. Then, if Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State tonight, Texas would still have a shot at the BCS championship, as well. Not likely, I suppose. But then Baylor isn't supposed to be beating Tech. So far. Confusing, to say the least.

UPDATE:  Oh, well, nice try Baylor. No more doormat for the Big Twelve. Now it's up to OK State. ;-)

HOWEVER:  I notice the ESPN guys saying that it might be better if the Sooners win. For then there'd be a three-way tie in the Big Twelve South, with the highest ranked South team in the BCS playing for the championship. Meaning it would be between Oklahoma and Texas. But... Loved the plane towing the banner over Stillwater today: "Texas 45 OU 35. Settled On A Neutral Field." BCS, take note.

FINAL: Sooners win 61-41, creating a three-way tie for the Big Twelve South winner to be decided by BCS ranking. My guess is that aerial advertising aside, it will be Oklahoma ahead of Texas followed by Tech and thus Oklahoma in the BCS championship as well. Leaving the Fiesta Bowl for the Longhorns.

Texas vs. Ags

Good game, with Texas up 21-3 at the half. Colt has taken some hard hits but he keeps coming back for another touchdown. The main question is whether Mack will run up the score. Possibly, for revenge for the last two years of losses to A&M. Or not. We'll see.

UPDATE:  Well, I guess you could call 49-9 running it up. But the second string accounted for the last touchdown. I'm still not sure why the Ags wore the 4th ID's patch on their uniforms, just that they did. Colt, the Tuscola Kid, had a great night. He's done all he can do for the Heisman, and the team for the BCS. The rest is up to the voters, the computers and Oklahoma State on Saturday night. ;-)

Fightin' Texas Aggie Band

While Mom makes up Turkey Day goodies a day in advance, and Mr. B. is on a play date in the country with a class friend, I am figuring where best to park tomorrow for us to attend the biennial Texas A&M parade up Congress Avenue to the Capitol of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and the Corps of Cadets, particularly the seniors in their senior boots and drawn sabers. Last time we took Mr. B. we missed all but the tag end for failing to find a parking spot close enough to the route. But that was at eight a.m. This one, mercifully, isn't until one p.m. so we should be able to get to it with no problem. The parades are fun to watch, along with all the white-haired Aggie alumni who live here, even if we do root for the Longhorns to win the game.

THURSDAY's UPDATE: Mr. B. enjoyed the band and the Parsons Mounted Cavalry the best. The cav brings up the rear, with the poop scoopers behind them. Great parade as always. You could smell the dry cleaning on those cadet uniforms!

"Style" or humiliation?

Oklahoma vaulted past Texas in the USA Today coaches poll today for what USA Today called "style points" in Oklahoma's rout of Texas Tech last night. In that game, the word makes some sense, I suppose. In Florida's humiliation of a lesser opponent, i.e. the Citadel, earlier in the day, it doesn't. Where is there any "style" in crushing an outclassed opponent?

Even Tech didn't deserve to be humiliated when it was plain they were outclassed. Style, to my mind, is Mack Brown's refusal last week to run the score up on Kansas after the Longhorns had them by three touchdowns. Instead, Mack sent in the second string. Now that's style.

Suicide in Norman

A majority of the daily's sportswriters expected Oklahoma to win tonight's game, but none of them predicted that Texas Tech would commit suicide. With the Sooners on top 42 to 7 at the half, it certainly looks like the Red Raiders have no way back to a win. Particularly not with a crumbling defense and a struggling offense. At this rate, the Okies will not only crush Tech but vault over Texas in the BCS rankings and run away with the Big Twelve. So Tech has got to come back and even it up.

UPDATE: They couldn't. Sooners won it 65 to 21. Now we wait to see what the BCS computers decide.

Tech vs OK

The barbar said the other day that, try as he might, he couldn't bring himself to root for the Sooners under any circumstances, not even in their game tomorrow night against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech.

An Okie win, the conventional wisdom has it, is the only chance the Longhorns have left to make it into the national championship game--possibly against Florida after the Gators whoop Alabama. But, it seems to me, there's just as big a chance that a victorious Oklahoma would then vault over Texas in the BCS poll, leaving the Longhorns about where they are now, at No. 3, or even a bit lower. So I don't know what to do, other than to watch the game and hope for the best by Sunday evening when the poll comes out. My inclination, like the barbar's, would be to cheer for any Texas team against Oklahoma, but maybe not. We'll see.

Texas vs. Kansas

I've tried, but I can't really imagine how the 9-1 Longhorns could lose to the 6-4 Jayhawks. Neither can Mr. B., so he's forsaking the game for cartoons. I am willing to admit that with a) the cold weather in Manhattan, Lawrence, Kan, b) the KU revenge factor, and, especially, c) all the Horns' injuries, particularly Brian Orakpo, that anything's possible. Even if it's no particular contest, I'll enjoy watching Austin's boyz do their Saturday work. Burnt Orange Nation still has the fan forum if you're into that sort of thing. Fun to follow the rants and raves, sometimes.

UPDATE: Texas 14, Kansas 0 at the half. Nice to see Brian is in, after all. KU defense, however, is pretty formidable. Fortunately, so is the Texas D. Saw some sidelines beseeching going on between roommates Colt and Jordan. Wonder what that was about.

FINAL: Texas wins it 35-7. Tough losing Blake Gideon to a possible concussion, though. Later, he checked out okay. No concussion.

Texas is No. 3

At least in the BCS, where it counts! The computers continue to love us. For now. Unless Tech loses to Oklahoma on Nov. 22, No. 3 is where the Longhorns will sit through the end of the season. Then, if Florida, as expected, beats Bama, Tech will be No. 1 and Florida will be No. 2 and they will play for the championship in Miami. Then all that No. 3 will be worth will be a bowl game. The only hope, I suppose, would be that Tech would have to play Missouri for the Big 12 championship--and might lose then. But that's unlikely at the moment. That Missouri could beat Tech, I mean.

UPDATE:  The daily's Suzanne Halliburton reminds that, if Tech loses one before the end of the season, the Big 12 South team with the highest ranking in the BCS would play for the conference championship--which could be the Longhorns. But, at this point, that's a big if.

Texas vs. Baylor

I didn't take this game seriously, so I forgot about posting on it. The halftime score of 28-14 conceals how well Baylor is playing, particularly their QB Robert Griffin who sure can run and pass. Colt's two interceptions are not going to help his Heisman campaign. Burnt Orange Nation still has the best fan forum.

UPDATE: Final 45-21 was not surprising. Pity backup Texas QB John Chiles had a good TD run called back for a penalty not of his making.

Texas No. 4

For once I can't argue with the BCS computers, which only dropped Texas to No. 4. I could wish that Tech had risen to No. 1 instead of merely No. 2. Making Alabama No. 1 seems a little silly, considering their win Saturday was over an unranked team. But they've got LSU up next, so who knows how long they'll stay up there. Tech has OK State to contend with. Texas has Baylor, the doormat of the Big 12. Most years.

DSL problems

Posting will be minimal, if any, for a while. My DSL modem is on the fritz. AT&T has promised to come Monday and check the line, if not necessarily replace the modem. The thing's warranty is out, and it seems to be the major difficulty, so I hope they replace it.

If not, I may consider switching ISPs, though that would be a major hassle and AT&T has provided good service up to now. We think a thunderstorm a couple of weeks ago, which knocked out the landline service (which contains the DSL connection) may have been the culprit here. The techs said the line was the victim of a power surge. We were thinking about having the landline disconnected anyhow. We use the cell phones most of the time.

ADDENDUM: Yes, we were disappointed by last night's Texas loss to Texas Tech. But Tech, a longtime in-state rival, played a great game and deserves to be No. 1, even if the BCS computers don't agree. The Horns also beat themselves, with too many dropped passes (and one almost-interception), costly penalties, an OL that couldn't stop Tech's D, etc. Hope Texas stays in the top five. They'll be back.

Not only is Sarah a Longhorns fan (apparently), but she knows energy policy:

"Palin's effort to create the Trans-Canada Alaska gas line — which would provide a vast new trove of natural gas each day to the U.S. — effectively nullifies the emerging gas cartel's potential impact on America. If OPEC strikes you as a bad group, the new cartel for natural gas, led by Russia and Iran, will be even worse."

Big Media doesn't have time to report this stuff. They're too busy concentrating on her shoes.

Texas vs. OK State

In the last few years against the Longhorns, the Cowboys have jumped into the lead in the first half, then fallen apart in the second half. I suspect they will not even get that far in today's game. Texas is just too good for them this year. That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it, at least until the half. The only really tough game the Horns have left this season will be Texas Tech next weekend.

UPDATE: Well, I might be a little optimistic, with Texas up only 21-14 at the half. OK State is playing tougher than I expected, but it still would be unusual if they kept it up through the fourth quarter.

FINAL:  Whoa, that was close. Texas wins 28-24. By this standard, Tech will be tough, indeed.

Tonight will be our fourth campout in the woods with Mr. B.'s cub scout den. This time we'll only be a few miles from the rancho. It's forecast to be in the high seventies during the day but drop into the upper forties overnight.

I'm bringing two radios, just in case, in order to listen to the Longhorns game. I expect them to beat Missouri, but I want to be sure to hear them do it. Watching it would be nice, but I never bought one of those portable televisions. No, that isn't true. We had one on the family sloop years ago, but it was stolen. Anyway, where we're going is in a valley between two hills, so the teevee reception might be poor. If necessary, I'll hike up the shortest hill to listen to the game. But it probably won't be.

UPDATE:  It was fun sitting in a camp chair, watching Orion climb the sky and listening to the Longhorns as they thrashed Missouri, 56-31. Next up, Oklahoma State, should be a bit tougher.

Texas vs Oklahoma

That it will not be an easy game for Texas is obvious after the first two drives, when it's OK 7, TX 3.

UPDATE: At the half, it's OK 21, TX 20. Hard fought and lots of excitement from both sides. It looks like Texas could win this thing, which would upset a lot of bookies but make me happy.

FINAL: Texas wins it, 45 to 35 in an instant classic! Next: Missouri. Another tough opponent.

LATER: The daily's Kirk Bohls, who predicted an OU win, proves he can eat crow when it's warranted.

Texas vs Colorado

Should be a pretty easy opener of the Big Twelve season for Texas, as these things go. A tune-up, you might say, tonight, for what likely will be a tough one, next week, against Oklahoma.

ADDENDUM: It was pretty easy, beating Colorado 38 to 14. And next week definitely won't be.

Horns on a roll

Big wins in the first four pre-conference games look really good. But Colorado's next, and Oklahoma thereafter. If Colorado falls, then the Longhorns certainly will have a chance to beat the Sooners. But only if that happens, will these first four victories be vindicated. Then, of course, it'll be on to another questionable result with Missouri. Colt's looking great. But he has to stay that way.

Vince, we hardly knew ye

Vince Young, injured and depressed at being booed when he throws an interception, seems to be a different fellow than the one who won a national title for the Longhorns in 2005--after throwing more than a few interceptions.

Now he's talking of suicide and carrying a gun in the glove compartment of his car. Even with Chris Sims (Chris Sims!) to mentor him now he seems to be having second thoughts about the NFL, possibly because of all the pressure: the hits, the fans, the coaches, all the relatives with their hands in his pockets. Hey, Vince, you can always come back to Austin and sell cars.

Stocking up

Lots of folks at the grocery this morning buying up bottled water, batteries and canned goods, in anticipation of possible lengthy power outages if Ike's core comes close to Austin after crossing the coast early Saturday. Mom, visiting friends in Maryland, is scheduled to come back Saturday but now may have to wait until Sunday, if Austin's airport is closed. Texas Longhorns home game Saturday with Arkansas has already been postponed.

Local forecast sounded dire yesterday: Not just torrential rain all-day and all-night Saturday, but sustained winds of 50 to 70 mph. Meaning trees downed and flying limbs and other debris. Today's forecast is milder, with winds only gusting to 45 mph and less rain. Evacuees from the coast still may be sorry they came. All depends on how close the core comes to us. Fifty miles east would be good. Ten miles west would be a true disaster. Meanwhile Ike is already bigger than Katrina in '05. It's pussyfooting through a patch of cool water in mid-Gulf this morning, but is expected to strengthen. Lots of uncertainy yet, but Houston looks now to bare the brunt of the winds and rain, and the storm surge is expected to be a killer on the coast, sweeping miles inland. Possibly overtopping Galveston's seventeen-foot seawall.

Longhorns vs El Paso

The El Paso Miners are not a good football team, but when Texas teams play Goliath, i.e. the Longhorns, they sometimes surprise themselves and win. They play hard, anyhow. So while I expect Texas to win, it might be close. Definitely closer than last week against Florida International. Again, Burnt Orange Nation's forum is the best place to visit if you like to follow Longhorn fan commentary, with an occasional troll.

UPDATE:  No, winning by 42-13 is not very close, but still closer than the 54-10 last week. Should nevertheless be respectable enough for the Top Ten. I got bored after the first half and stopping watching. I'm sure next week's game with Arkansas will not be boring, because it is bound to be tougher.

Longhorns vs Owls

Not the Rice Owls, they come later in the season. But the Florida Atlantic University Owls, champs of the Sun Belt Conference in 2007. Should be interesting, this first game of the Horns' season which starts at six local time. The Owls' coach thinks the Horns are soft. He may be right; we're going to find out. Game's here in town, so we had to get pay-per-view, or go sit in the nosebleed section for the same price. Nicer at home. Looks like rain, anyhow. Burnt Orange Nation's forum is a good way to follow it.

UPDATE:  Good Horns win at 52-10. Sure didn't look soft to me, at over 500 yards of total offense. Colt is running better, passes better, too. Has good receivers in Shipley, Cosby, etc. Vondrell McGee running well. Could be an interesting season. Hope Charlie Tanner's ankle is okay.

Horns a question mark

Oklahoma seems to be the favorite of the betting line, both to win the Big Twelve South this year and, less so, the Big Twelve itself. The Longhorns may not even be up in the pre-season Top Ten--which will be released soon The daily's Kirk Bohl's says what the Horns do this year depends on whether Coach Mack Brown keeps the growl he acquired before last season's Holiday Bowl win. We might be able to bet on Burnt Orange Nation coming up with an optimistic prediction when they get around to it.

Devil's Hollow snares Benson

The Chicago Bears already were down on RB Cedric Benson for a pitiful average of 3.4 yards per carry--a product of chronic injuries since leaving Texas in 2005 as its only running back to gain a thousand yards in four consecutive seasons. Now his pro career is in doubt after his third arrest (but first pepper-spraying) since 2002. This time it was at Lake Travis' hard-partyin', drunk-on-the-water Devil's Hollow (Cove)--charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Col. E.M. House

There isn't often cause these days to recall the time when men's collars still turned up instead of down. Nor Edward House, of Galveston, who President Woodrow Wilson referred to as his "second personality." But it all came together this morning, for the old kingmaker of Texas gubernatorial politics, as workers began to cover the colonel's old horse pasture with Astro Turf. It was the latest facelift for the field that, in 1937, became House Park, a celebrated Austin stadium for the Friday Night Lights of high school football.

Good for you, cornerback Aaron Ross, former Texas Longhorn on the 2005 National Championship team's win in the Rose Bowl, now a Super Bowl champ in his first, rookie season in the National Football League. "Marry me, Major"

That was just one of the prominent signs of similar sentiments directed at Longhorns QB Major Applewhite that often appeared in the stands at Texas home games from 1998 to 2001. Now Major's coming back as a running backs (huh?) coach. He did so well as offensive coordinator at Rice that I'd have supposed he'd want to try another year of his luck with the Crimson Tide's offense before coming home to Austin. But the daily's Kirk Bohls says (sort of) that the skinny guy with the funny name--whose popularity with alumni is second only to Vince--was just ready to return.

MORE:  Burnt Orange Nation brings some conventional reporting to the news and concludes Major was hamstrung and unhappy in Al'abam, and will be a lot more than the RB coach at Texas. Sounds logical. Good to have you back, Major, and good luck!

OU falls to dirty play

I don't ever cry over Oklahoma's spilt milk. I couldn't care less whether they lose a football game. But their 48-28 loss to West Virginia last night still leaves a bad taste. The Sooners may have been the only team to have a DT arrested for shoplifting, but I don't think I've ever seen so many fouls in a college football game. And not all of them were called. Fox kept replaying video of one play showing a WVA player punching an OK receiver in the crotch after he fumbled a pass and was already down. No flag on that one. Gang tackling by WVA was the norm, late hits, pass interference, face masks, punches thrown, words exchanged. WVA clearly was the faster team, keeping the Sooner's pimply-faced QB running for his life all night, but they didn't have to play dirty. Except, I guess, they're used to playing dirty. Shame on them and shame on their coaches. And on the MSM whose stories after the game proved, once again, that what you can see is what you don't get.

Happy New Year, y'all

Been an eclectic day around the rancho. Mr. B. and I enjoyed Oklahoma State's defeat of Indiana, followed by watching his latest Laurel & Hardy flick, "Flying Deuces." New Year's eves are restful when you're too old and your son is too young for parties. He read a new picture book on gladiators while I read the latest Dortmunder burglary escapade, "Watch Your Back." Alamo Bowl

After complaining about the intermittant audio for the Holiday Bowl, I should say that ESPN360.com is working perfectly for tonight's Alamo Bowl, audio and video. Quite a service. The Ags, however, ain't doing so well, as QB McGee runs for his life from the Penn State defense.

UPDATE:  Mr. B., a Patriots fan, enjoyed their comeback win over the Giants, while I watched the hapless Aggies fail to duplicate their regular season victory over the Longhorns and fall 24-17 to PSU. He came in occasionally to watch, but found the Patriots 38-35 game too compelling to stay for long.

Holiday Bowl

Watching the game on ESPN360.com is disconcerting. It's about seven minutes behind the game on the Longhorn Sports Radio Network, and the Web game audio is hard to understand because it keeps cutting in and out. But the halftime score, 28 to 10, Longhorns, is easily understandable. Texas is threatening to walk away with it. If Arizona State keeps up the turnovers and Texas keeps on sacking their QB, this is going to be a rout.

UPDATE:  It pretty much was, Texas winning 52 to 34. Only wish they'd played like that all season--which they ended 10-3. Losses to Oklahoma and A&M in the same season really stung.

Mizzou vs Oklahoma

Mr. B. and I are awaiting the big Big 12 championship game tonight which will decide whether Missouri plays for the national championship. We are pulling for Missouri and their Heisman-candidate QB Chase Daniel, who is from the Dallas area. The bookies favor the Okies, who have already beaten Mizzou once this year. Hopefully CD & Co. have figured out how to prevent a repeat of that.

UPDATE:  With eleven minutes to play, it's OU 35 and Mizzou just 17. Bye, bye Missouri. Daniel keeps making faces. He's a Texan. He's seen the Sooner steamroller before. Now he's under it.

Decision day

Good games today at 2:30 and 7 p.m. I'll be happy if OK State knocks off Zero U, but I'd be happy with either a Mizzou or a Kansas win. Just so long as the Big 12 is in the title game. Texas, outplayed and outcoached yesterday by Texas A&M looks to be well out of it no matter what happens. Their only bright spot: RB Jamaal Charles, who deserves a better team behind him.

UPDATE: The Okies won and so did Mizzou. Only bad thing now is that Mizzou has to beat Oklahoma for the Big 12 title, or the Big 12 is out of the National Title game. I think. It's all a little confusing, as usual, after several upsets. Strange season, this one.

Aggies vs Texas

It's Aggies QB Stephen McGee, the junior from Burnet (just west of Austin) leading the Big 12's No. 2 rushing offense, vs. Texas QB Colt McCoy, the Tuscola Kid (also call the "pistolas," or pistols, by Spanish-language sportscasters) who could break 3,000 yards passing for the season today and help his team get its seventh consecutive 10-win season, the longest such streak in the country. Hook 'Em!

UPDATE: The Horns are really stinkin' up the joint. Three and out, three and out, three and out. Meanwhile, the Ags have become a successful passing team. Which makes sense. Pass defense is Texas' worst characteristric this season. So it's 17-3 Ags. Fortunately, there's still another half for the Horns to figure out how to play football.

FINAL: They almost did, but it wasn't enough. Ags win, 38-30, for the second year in a row. Another disappointing season for Texas, but this time without an injured Colt for an excuse.

The Big 12 North

It's a pleasure to see Kansas and Missouri in the BCS' top five, because they're bringing back the early overall credibility of the Big 12 conference, which has fallen on hard times in recent years. Only Oklahoma and Texas, in the South division, were playing tough and ranking high. So, after Texas whoops the Aggies tomorrow, and Oklahoma holds off (maybe) their in-state rival Oklahoma State on Saturday, we will settle in to watch Kansas and Missouri go at it that night. I'm rooting for Kansas, since their QB, Todd Reesing, is a local talent. Besides, I'd really like to see the Big 12 in the national championship game and Kansas has to win for that to happen.

Longhorns vs Red Raiders

This is the old Texas, scoring on just about every possession, going into the half 28 to 20 against Texas Tech. RB Jamaal Charles is one of the reasons, bringing his great play of the fourth quarters of the last two games into the first half of this one. The "pistolas" (pistols) Colt McCoy, as they call him on Spanish station KNWX-AM, helped by having only one interception, for a change.

UPDATE: The old Texas, indeed, with their most dominant performance this year, including a spectacular touchdown run by McCoy breaking two tackles. Texas wins 59-43. If they play like this next week, Texas A&M will go down easily to give the Horns a 10-win season.

Second grade boys are like first grade boys and kindergarteners. They go with the winners. They don't waste effort being loyal when a team is losing. Longhorns vs Cowboys

Well, it's 28-14 at the half, with Oklahoma State ahead. But as the daily said this morning, we've been here before. The Horns have been behind by much more in this series and still come back to win. So there's no sweat yet. Plus Charles and McGee have broken loose for some nice rushes in the first half, one of them a touchdown for Charles, so we've probably got more from them to look forward to before the games ends. Keep with the BON'ers.

Burnt Orange Nation thinks the game tomorrow against Oklahoma State will be a defining moment for the Longhorns. Texas vs Nebraska

Texas is struggling again, as always this season. Texas fans got spoiled the last few years, used to a quick lede. No more. It's Huskers 17, Longhorns 9 in the FOURTH quarter. Yipes. Even if we pull this one out, it won't erase the O line collapse, Colt's geting hammered, and Charles' mediocre rushing.

Horns vs Sooners

Too many questions surround the Longhorns to have much confidence in their beating Oklahoma today, though I would never bet against them. If the defense can get to OU QB Sam Bradford as much as KState's defense got to Colt McCoy, the OU juggernaut certainly could be slowed, perhaps even stopped.

But it's really a question of whether the UT O line can give Colt time to work, and if not, whether the Texas coaches shift hard to the running game, which Colorado used so effectively against the Sooners. Of course if McCoy is knocked out early (and let us pray, sports fans, that his concussion isn't aggravated, which could endanger his young life), then backup QB John Chiles will have to take over, and his strong suit is the run. Like I say, just too many questions to have confidence in the outcome. But we shall see.

The Horns, at least, are confident. Hook 'Em!

UPDATE: Great game, rare readers! Tied at the half at 14 all. Texas has a chance to pull this out!

FINAL: It just wasn't to be. Oklahoma wins 28-21, and Texas falls out of the Top 25 for the first time since, uh, 2000, I think. This time, though, they won't likely get back in. Good try, though

Let's hope he survives

After a "mild concussion" on Saturday, Colt McCoy announces two days later that he will play against Oklahoma this weekend. Believe I've read it takes a week to get over even a "mild concussion," which I keep putting in quotes because that's what we're told the team doctors called the injury that had McCoy reportedly vomiting on the sidelines in the fourth quarter

"He's tough," head coach Mack Brown said. "Most kids would have come out at halftime."

He plainly isn't tough. This was his second debilitating injury at the hands of a K-State tackler in less than a year. Oklahoma is tough. Let's hope Colt is not throwing his life away to make his coaches happy. And fer crissakes, Brown, will you stop calling your players "kids." Of all the dopey coach-speak routines, that is the sorriest.

UPDATE: Someone else who thinks Colt needs to sit this one out, for his own health. On the other hand, UT legend Major Applewhite had a concussion in 1998 and played the next weekend, too. But Major had this little trick of sliding to the ground when a tackler was about to grab him.

I wouldn't normally give ten cents for CBS News. But they caught my eye with a lengthy interview with the Longhorn that every Longhorn fan misses: VY. It's only unfortunate that we are left with the impression that Vince can't speak grammatical English. That's never the case in print where it is common practice to clean up a speaker's words. Nevertheless, it's obvious he's a paragon of self-confidence and esprit, something the current team certainly could use.

Zero U Sucks

Win, lose, or draw (and it'll probably be a loss) it's Oklahoma Hate Week. Might as well hate 'em since we're not very likely to be able to beat 'em. That was so before Colt McCoy got his "mild concussion" from Kansas State. With untested John Chiles taking his place, the chances will not improve. So enjoy the hate. The game is likely to be ugly.

Top 25

It's been a wild college football season so far, so it's hard to be sure whether the new Top 25 rankings will hold for long. But they've taken the wind out of Texas' sails, plunging the Longhorns from No. 7 to No. 19 in the new AP poll, and 16 in the new USA Today coaches' poll.

Nebraska (25 in AP and 23 in USAT) looks to be the last ranked team Texas will play this season, after almost certainly losing to No. 10 Oklahoma this Saturday. So even if they beat Nebraska, it won't raise their ranking much, assuming they're still ranked after Oklahoma. I expect they won't be.

Colt seems to be injured

Not too surprising, considering how his offensive line was unable to protect him for most of the game. But it could also be that he's just not tough enough to play college football.

Reprise: Tuscola Kid

It's McCoy's return today to playing Kansas State, the team that knocked him out last season and sent the Longhorns to the Alamo Bowl. That's not expected to happen today, but we're going to find out.

UPDATE: Did we ever. History repeats: Colt is hurt, again, and the half ends at 24-14 Kansas State. I'd like to be there for Vince's halftime locker room pep talk. If Colt can't play, I hope his backup John Chiles can throw.

2nd UPDATE: Colt came back, only to throw more interceptions and get sacked and blown up repeatedly, and with about eight minutes to play it's obvious K State, at 41-21 so far, is going to win this game for the second year in a row. It's heresy to say so, but, in addition to an O line, we need a new QB. Trouble is, we don't really have one. It's going to be a looong season.

Henry's gangsta image

The daily's Cedric Golden reveals that Longhorns reserve running back and special teams player James Henry's arrest on two felonies was predictable from his glamorizing of the thug life on his MySpace page, which has been taken down. Ced says Coach Mack Brown needs to follow Penn State Coach Joe Paterno, whose troubled (and well-behaved) Nittany Lions are all cleaning out the stadium after home games this year because six of them were arrested in the preseason.

Another Longhorn arrested

Fortunately, James Henry is a not a starter. Unfortunately, his charges are two 3rd degree felonies. The fact that he is the sixth player arrested since last June may reveal a larger, coaching problem, as well.

UPDATE: Sounds bad for Henry, whose playing will be missed. He set up the go-ahead touchdown against TCU.

Losses ahead

It was depressing reading the daily's takes on the Texas-UCF 35-32 squeaker. BurntOrangeNation isn't much more optimistic. Amazing that Texas only fell to No. 7 in the AP poll and held on to No. 6 in the USA Today one. Rice next week could be the last win for the Longhorns for quite a while. Or maybe a miracle will happen. And pigs might fly.

These tight games...

The Longhorns seem to struggle more as this season progresses. For the third time they have a tight game against an insignificant opponent. With the first half almost over, it would have been a 10-all tie with Central Florida if not for a pick by Brandon Foster making it 13-10 Texas. Central who? The Oklahoma game is going to be murder this year. Not to mention Nebraska, Tech, and A&M.

UPDATE: They done better, in the last minute of the half, with a Colt to Jones TD, making it 20-10. But why not some quick dominance? Why all this sluggish struggle against relatively puny competition? Arrrgh.

MORE: And then it got worse. Texas won 35-32, but, but, but....

Texas 34, Tcu 13

The Longhorns finally showed up in the second half, just fashionably late. And Colt redeemed himself. Goodnight horny toads. Good wrapup here.

Game day

I'm on pins and needles awaiting kickoff at 6 p.m. or so between Texas and Texas Christian. I'm just trying not to show it. You can also read this. I will go mow the back forty to try and take my mind off it.

UPDATE: 10-0 TCU at the half. Scary. Both scores on Colt's two interceptions. The Texas offense looks worse than last week. This looks to be an awful season. Oklahoma will eat us for lunch, just to mention one Big 12 opponent.

MORE:  10-10 at end of third quarter. Texas is coming back! Heck yeah, 17-10 Texas at start of fourth quarter. About time.

Lookin' ahead to TCU

Did you know that Texas Christian has won five straight against the Big 12? That's why the Longhorns better fix what happened against Arkansas State, in a hurry. BON thinks they will. Hopes, anyhow. We'll find out Saturday. Meanwhile, the Tuscola Kid's fans have a nice new site to visit.

Longhorns football

Unnecessary penalties, unnecessary injuries and Colt McCoy's two interceptions in the first half, with the Horns leading Arkansas State just 14 to 3. Not much of a tune-up game, so far.

UPDATE: A shocking game, actually. Horns winning their buy-a-win by only 21-13. Their new offensive line is shaky, the inexperienced secondary is, well, something not much better than last year's 99th in the nation on pass defense. And McCoy could have had five total picks, if the ASU defenders hadn't dropped three of them. The daily's Kirk Bohls predicted Friday they could lose two games this year and only go to the Cotton Bowl. I thought, then, that was pessimistic. But not now. They might lose even more. Texas Christian certainly will have a chance next week.

Longhorns go 11-1?

That's the prediction of sportswriter Ced Golden, in the daily, predicting a loss to Nebraska or Texas Tech. Mostly likely, he concludes, to Nebraska. Some of his colleagues are even more pessimistic, forecasting up to four losses and even another season-ending injury for the Tuscola Kid, QB Colt McCoy. Ced's more optimistic, and I certainly am, but I wish he'd take back that loss to Nebraska.

Attrition

It isn't even college football season yet, and the starting lineup of the Texas Longhorns already may have shrunk by one player, 2006 top recruit and linebacker Sergio Kindle, 19, who is faced with a DWI charge. Meanwhile ex-safety Robert Joseph, who was suspended in June after being charged with burglary of a vehicle, has now been charged in a new incident with aggravated robbery--a first degree felony. Defensive end Henry Melton, 20, also was charged with DWI in June. Please, guys, let the attrition stop here, OK?

Aaron to join Vince?

Maybe, according to the Statesman's sportswriter Kirk Bohls. The Titans need to replace Pacman Jones. But the Bears might draft Ross if Tennessee doesn't. Either way, Aaron will still be bringing water to Sanya.

Super Nate

Don't normally get worked up over the Super Bowl. Might next year if Vince takes his Titans there. Also I have friends in Indiana and Illinois, and so hesitate to root for one team or the other. Except for a real good former Longhorn, Nathan Vasher, who plays for the Bears. Vasher was outstanding for Texas, and he's a good player for the Bears, despite being one of their lowest paid. So I'll go for the Bears, and hope Nate has a good game. Altho from what I've seen of the game so far, in the pouring monsoon in Miami, it would help to have web feet. They even call baseball games on account of rain.

UPDATE  Well, they lost, but Vasher had six tackles, four of them solo. I also forgot Texas ex Cedric Benson, a Bears' running back. Shouldn't have forgotten him. He might have helped get the Bears a win if he hadn't left the game in the first quarter with a twisted ankle. He was the only one likely to break a regrettable stat: no former Longhorn has ever made a touchdown in a Super Bowl.

Vince, Vince

There's always next year (i.e. this year) for Diet Pepsi's NFL Rookie of the Year. VY also won the AP's Offensive Rookie of the Year last month. He's already got more running yards (552) than the two QBs in Sunday's Super Bowl combined (Manning, 36; Grossman, 2). If he stays healthy and the Titans grow, he could be there this time next year, says the daily's Kirk Bohls. Oh, yeah.

Boomers gettin' boomed

The Boomer Sooners are gettin' it handed to them, 21-10 at the half, by the boys from the blue turf. Couldn't happen to a nicer Big 12 team, if it has to happen to a Big 12 team. I was glad to see Tech win, and just a tad sorry to see Nebraska lose, but Oklahoma? I really don't mind if I do see them get run over--even by a WAC team.

The Fat Guy has the right attitude:

"I’m kinda happy about having Boise State bust up the Usual Suspects of New Year’s Day. That should be fun to watch - I hope they ruin the Boomer Sooner’s day; not because I don’t like OU, but because I think the Blue Astroturf guys winning creates some chaos and drives water-cooler talk."

True. All true. But it also doesn't hurt to see the Longhorns' nemesis get shellaced, either.

UPDATE  The Sooners got WACed, 43-42 in overtime, on a faked pass. Quite a game.

Vince, the roll is over

On a muddy Nashville football field, the Titans failed to make it seven in a row and went down to the New England Patriots 40-23, ending their Cinderella roll. CBS's last shot of Vince was him on the bench with his face in his hands. He had a good season for an NFL rookie. It just wasn't enough.

UPDATE  The sheep of the Associated Press ganged up on him, claiming he played that game "like a rookie," except he didn't to my eyes. His receivers dropped too many. His offensive line couldn't protect him. It's a team game. He inspires, no doubt, alone, but he can't win alone, or lose alone either. He'll have an outstanding 2007. Go get 'em Vince!

Tuscola Kid, Part 6

In less than two hours we'll start to find out if Texas QB Colt McCoy really is recovered from his nerve injuries and can play, once again, like the Big 12 freshman of the year. Not that Iowa is expected to present much of a challenge, but if Colt really isn't well, or worse yet, gets injured yet again, not only could the Horns lose the Alamo Bowl, but their 2007 season would be in serious doubt. Mainly because, as sportswriter Kirk Bohls says in the Austin daily, coach Mack Brown so mishandled backup QB Jevan Snead that Snead transferred to Mississippi and won't be available today or next year. So a lot is riding on the game that starts at 3:30 p.m. CST. Alas we do not get ESPN here at the Rancho, so will be listening in on the Longhorns Radio Network, instead.

End of 1st Quarter: Iowa winning 14-3. McCoy seems okay but the offense is not clicking and the defense, as usual this season, is having trouble stopping the pass.

At the Half: It's Iowa 14, Texas 10. McCoy doing better, with a touchdown pass late in the second quarter, and the defense is doing better, forcing punts, and an Aaron Ross interception set up the drive for the touchdown. But Iowa's got a hot offense, so it's still a ballgame.

End of 3rd Quarter: Iowa 21, Texas 20. Texas came out sacking Iowa QB Drew Tate, and McCoy steadily improving. Texas got a field goal, and then a touchdown (Colt tying the NCAA touchdown record for a freshman), but Iowa fought back and leads by one point.

Final score: Texas 26, Iowa 24. Texas gets a 10 win season for the sixth time in a row, a record of some sort. Colt didn't break the NCAA record for a freshman, but he's apparently back in good form and 2007 should be a good season!

Vince, and the roll continues...

Does it ever. Tennesee Titans over Buffalo Bills 30-29 in a wild, seesaw shootout. Former Texas QB Vince Young threw two touchdowns and ran 39 yards for another one--enough to raise his rushing yardage for the season to set an NFL record for a rookie QB. Tennessee had some great plays called back for penalties. Too many face masks and personal fouls. Without them, they might have won comfortably, instead of by just one point. But I'm sure they'll take it.

Tuscola Kid, Part 5

Colt, the Big 12's offensive freshman of the year, is cleared to play in the Alamo Bowl, according to Cedric Golden in the Austin daily:

"McCoy has been evaluated regularly since sustaining a severe pinched nerve in his neck against Texas A&M on Nov. 24. [Texas athletic trainer Kenny] Boyd said McCoy passed a thorough group of on-field and off-field tests before being released to play."

Of course, you remember that he was cleared to play for the A&M game, after his first nerve injury against Kansas State. So who knows? You would suppose if it doesn't happen again against Iowa, we can figure he's okay and the Horns' hopes for 2007 are in good shape. And if it does happen again, his career might be over before it really begins, and then we'd have to see if backup QB Sherrod Harris, a high school standout and 4.0 student, is anything special in college ball. For more on Colt and his fans, see this site.

Snead to Ole Miss

Jevan Snead, the tall, blonde former freshman Texas QB who almost saved the Longhorns against Kansas State when redshirt-freshman QB Colt McCoy was injured and left the game in the first quarter, has committed to play for the University of Mississippi. I guess we can be happy he at least won't be playing in the Big 12, since he's good enough to pose a threat. Strange kid, in a way. You'd think he'd have been willing to gamble on riding the bench a while longer, considering Colt was injured twice in the same way--pinched nerve--in back to back games and isn't certain for the Horns' bowl game. Transferring means Snead'll have another year of ildness, sitting out all of the Rebels' games in 2007 under NCAA rules.

Jacksonville 17, Tennessee 24. All the stats here. Story as soon as there is one.

12th Man or 12th Imam? You decide.

While the mad Iranian president hosts his make-believe conference of the history-challenged discussing whether the Holocaust actually occurred, Roger L. Simon has come up with a brilliant idea: a counter symposium on whether the 12th Imam actually exists, or is this mythic religious figure proof of insanity in his believers--like the president of Iran? We already know he's mad.

I have just the venue, the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Because it could be that a tragic misspelling has been at work here all along. In other words: is the 12th Imam a genuine religious figure? Or merely the misunderstood 12th Man of Texas A&M University football?

Will the 12th Imam (12th Man?) make an appearance at the 50 yard line at the upcoming game when Texas A&M surely will beat California? Will the mad president of Iran be in a luxury box? Will he be suited up in maroon to step in to aid the team? Or are his followers just maroons? Watch the game Dec. 28 and find out!

Rice gets a bowl

Nice to see Rice University going to a bowl game this year, for the first time since 1961--the New Orleans Bowl on Friday night, Dec. 22. Especially after their disastrous 1-10 season last year. Though they are often no more than a doormat to the Longhorns in the regular season, the Owls nevertheless are a pretty fair team, usually, and one suspects their 7-5 season this year has a lot to do with their new offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, still the favorite quarterback of many Longhorns fans (including me), or at least a close second to Vince.

Tuscola Kid, Part 4

Texas QB Colt McCoy walked out of Austin's Brackenridge Hospital a few hours after being carted off the field tied to a stretcher.

"He had been taken to the hospital for X-rays and observation after landing hard on the turf in the final seconds of Texas’ 12-7 loss to Texas A&M. It was unclear what McCoy may have injured...At the hospital, workers and patients applauded as McCoy walked out with his family."

Glad to hear he can walk. Hope to hear he can play again for whatever bowl game the Horns get. But this looked similar to his injury at the beginning of the K State game, i.e. he could not move his right arm for a time. Hope some enterprising reporter is trying to find out if the two injuries are medically connected.

UPDATE  Suzanne Halliburton reports that Colt had a severe pinched nerve in his neck--his second nerve injury in two games--after an A&M defender hit him under the jaw but trainer Kenny Boyd expects a full recovery.

No joke

Aggies won it, 12-7. Best on the ground, best through the air, best on defense. We'll just have to hope that Colt is not seriously injured. Or, if he is, that Jevan can grow into the job next year. This year is over for the Longhorns, except for whatever bowl bid they get. The Alamo, maybe? More like the Cotton or the Gator.

Aggie Joke?

Either the Aggies are time-challenged, or the local daily got the parade time wrong. We found a place to park and hustled to 7th and Congress Avenue just in time to see the tail-end of the parade--the shovel section marching behind the Parsons Mounted Cavalry. It was only 8:20 a.m. They weren't even supposed to start until 8:30. So, no photo. Bigger crowd than usual. Ninety minutes to game time.

UPDATE  The joke is on me. The daily said it was at 8. I misread it, probably having a senior moment without realizing it. That's the way they work. That's also the way blogs work, making snap judgements, which I try not to do with the news. Oh, well. The Ags won the game. Bless 'em. They deserved it.

Horns or Aggies but Bulldogs forever

Kevin Robbins does a nice job showing why the Friday night lights are where it's at in Texas via Aggies quarterback Stephen McGee and Texas receiver Jordan Shipley--and why folks in their hometown of Burnet want the Longhorns to win Friday but Stephen to have a good game.

Texas vs the Ags

Texas is comfortably favored to beat Texas A&M on Friday and so advance to the Big 12 Championship against Nebraska. As Longhorn Nation reminds, the last time the Ags beat the Longhorns, Colt McCoy was in the eighth grade. In Kansas City, we'll see something, probably, like a much tighter game for one thing. I just hope it doesn't lead to playing Boise State in a bowl. From the Rose Bowl to Boise State in one year would be too much to swallow.

We're taking Mr. Boy to see the A&M Corps of Cadets march up Congress Avenue to the Capitol Friday morning, something he hasn't seen since he was two. I'll post the best picture from that. Their band is good and it's always fun to see the seniors with their riding boots and swords. Some of those boys could be lieutenants in Iraq or Afghan this time next year.

The Tuscola Kid

Looks like Colt McCoy may yet return as Texas QB, after two weeks rest of his shoulder before the A&M game the day after Thanksgiving. If the injury really is the "stinger" he's said to have told Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis, he might even be back on track with a Heisman ranking after beating the Aggies. So Colt, personally, could yet have a remarkable season, NCAA record-setting freshman QB (despite really being a sophomore, quaintly called a "redshirt" freshman), top 2 or 3 in the Heisman polls, etc, etc., etc.

The Longhorns season is effectively over wth the loss to K State, unless you count winning the Big 12 as a big deal (not this year), and playing Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Assuming Texas ranks that high with two losses. Maybe somebody else can get to pummel Boise State. There's good fortune.

Texas at Kansas State

The unthinkable finally happened and the Tuscola Kid looks to be injured, or at least he's been out of the game for several drives. Jevan Snead, his backup, still getting into the rhythm of the offense with K State ahead 21-14. The Horns' season could be on the line here.

UPDATE  It was. Texas lost 45-42. I'll always believe it was Colt's injury taking him out of the game that caused it, even though Jevan tried hard and was at times impressive. But he hadn't played since the Sam Houston State game and he turned in only mediocre passing (13 for 30) and minus 3 yards rushing. Texas fumbles and miscues played a part, as well. But K State always plays hard, and this year it was enough.

Tuscola Kid, Part 3

With the elections swinging badly for war supporters, and with them a looming prospect of another American cut-and-run--thirty-one years after doing it in South Vietnam--it's a pleasure to turn to Longhorns football and the ongoing redshirt freshman QB phenom Colt McCoy.

"McCoy...is at the head of the freshman quarterback class. His passing prowess has been documented — he's two touchdown passes away from tying the national freshman record and ranks second nationally in pass efficiency. His winning at such a young age also is extraordinary, especially if the Longhorns make it to the Bowl Championship Series title game. Former Virginia Tech star Michael Vick is the only freshman quarterback to lead a team to the BCS title game."

Texas vs. Oklahoma State

This could be another fluid, high-scoring game, given OK State's good passing game and the lack of a Texas passing defense worthy of the name. But if their pass-or-run QB tries much running, he will be shut down pretty quick by the superior Texas run defense. Burnt Orange Nation pretty much agrees, predicting a 38-21 Texas victory.

But this other OSU (as in Ohio State U.) has made it a habit in games of the past two years to jump out well ahead in the first half, then have their butts handed to them in the second half. This time, Texas, how about ending the first half ahead for a change? Or, maybe not, given that nail-biters make better theater. Not that it will matter to the BCS poll which seems determined to match up Louisville with Michigan or Ohio State. Wait and see.

UPDATE  Texas comes out strong, 20-3, and McCoy's play is worth a Heisman look. Ends up with a Texas win, 36-10, McCoy sets a school record for TDs in a single season (and places second in NCAA record for a freshman QB), and now we wait to see if the BCS computers are impressed enough to move Texas up in the rankings. Looks to me, though, that unless Rutgers beats Louisville, the national championship game will be Louisville vs. Ohio State, and Texas an also-ran.

Cubs cheer Horns

The Tiger Cubs finally made their appointment with the Texas Longhorns at D-K Royal Memorial Stadium this afternoon, after being rained out three weeks in a row. Young, assistant coaches led cubs and parents in cheers (Texas...Fight!) and syncopated handclapping (I had forgotten all this, not having been in fan seating since college). I have preferred to watch college football on television, with the sound off--in favor of the Longhorns Sports Network on radio--so as to avoid the talking heads who seldom seem to talk about the teams but only themselves.

So we got to see Colt McCoy up close ("Look, Dad, it's number twelve, Colt McCoy"), on the sidelines in front of us warming up with 10-yard passes. He's only about two inches shorter than Vince but he looks smaller. Colt's backup, Jevan Snead, who was also before us warming up, is more Vince's size, but Colt's sure made the most of himself so far. So much we have started seeing news items about Jevan's alleged plans to transfer somewhere he can get more playing time. Colt waited a year as Vince's understudy. Will Jevan?

What most impressed me about these young men, and the rest of the team we also saw (star kicker Ryan Bailey, running backs Jamal Charles and Selvin Young, and receivers Billy Pittman and Limas Sweed) was their ease with their bodies and the football. On the sidelines, none of the receivers even moved. They just opened their hands and caught the well-aimed ball. On the field, the receivers were fluid motion. Colt bounces a football, once, off its pointed end on the turf, like a basketball, without any apparant concentration, a little trick he probably learned as a middle-schooler, this football coach's son has played for so long.

Mr. Boy asked plenty of questions but got bored quickly and finally wanted to leave because the sun was down behind the stadium, and we were cold. He said on the way home that he still prefers basketball. I have seen his six-year-old dedication at the plaground, shooting baskets one after another for up to twenty minutes at a stretch. Hitting about a third of them when he stands real close to the adult-height hoop.

I like the Tuscola Kid, but not so much his information management. The "it's all about the team" soundbites he's learned to ply the microphones with, are becoming tiresome. Candor, Colt. Just a tad. Vince had candor, still does, as he QB's the Tennesee Titans. Colt sounds like a robot sometimes.

The Tuscola Kid, part 2

Colt McCoy, the Longhorns' redshirt freshman QB, cracks the Rocky Mountain News' Heisman poll for the first time--in fifth place. The kid from the tiny (population 714) West Texas town of Tuscola, also was named the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Week and was presented the offensive game ball of the Master Coaches Survey for leading  the Texas comeback over Texas Tech. According to the Austin American-Statesman's sportswriter Suzanne Halliburton: one more touchdown pass and Colt will be in a six-way tie on the all-time NCAA Division I-A freshman list. How's that for going from unknown to college football's best in less than three months?

Adios Longhorns

El Nino is being merciless, away down there off the coast of Peru, so it looks like Mr. B. and his Tiger Cub buds will not be making a Longhorns practice for the fourth Thursday in a row. Because the field at DK-Royal-Memorial Stadium will be soggy again and they'll move the practice inside where there is no seating for cubs and parents. Oh, well, it was a cool invite. And there's always next week, maybe, after Oklahoma State, which might be another Tech, or worse.

From the Austin-San Antonio National Weather Service Forecast Center in New Braunfels.

Wednesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. East northeast wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Northeast wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Rainwise, El Nino is being merciful. Spacing it out like this--midweek now for four weeks--means we haven't had a flash flood yet. Of course, we haven't had a lot of rain, either, and the lakes/reservoirs are still way down.

Texas vs Texas Tech

This should be a fast, high-scoring game out there in Lubbock on the South Plains. Rather like basketball except with longer passes. There is some thought (Austin sportswriter Kirk Bohls) that the Longhorns will focus on the ground game to control the clock, but when Tech gets the ball, the best they've got is an aerial circus, so the passing will predominate. The bookies line is Texas by 11, but I hope it's more than that. TBS, 6 p.m. CDT

UPDATE  Yipes, Tech 31, Texas 21 at the half and Tech has almost 400 yards passing. Upset? Maybe.

AGAIN  OK, Texas 35, Tech 31. Saltshaker a blogger at statesman.com summed this up real well before the game:

"What does (Tech coach Mike) Leach do to get these less than recruits to make these kinds of plays and run non stop?

"Try double conditioning, and making the receivers only catch 60mph tennis balls, fired out of a ball gun. You think I’m kidding? I’m not.  He believes the boys must be in better shape and be able to catch screaming tennis balls.  That’s why he produces such an array of good receivers so quickly.

"I'm imagining Jean Claude Van Damme style training montages with Sensei Leach making the young QB wear a blind fold and 'feel' the open receiver.

"He doesn’t run a training camp.....it's a football monastery.

"Colt, your mission this week......just get us the hell out of there with a win."

FINAL  He did. Texas wins, 35-31. Whew!

Third time was not the charm

The Cub Scouts got another bye on seeing a Longhorns' practice this afternoon. The field at DK Royal-Memorial Stadium is soggy from yesterday's rains, so the team will practice indoors to avoid injuries, and there's no seating at the indoor field. El Nino gets the blame for making this a wetter-than-normal fall. Maybe next week?

That Longhorns practice

Mr. Boy and his fellow Cub Scouts allegedly are on for tomorrow's Longhorns practice, the third rescheduling in a row due to rain. Meanwhile, it's raining again, and if it rains enough today and tonight, presumably the field will be wet enough once again (as it was last Thursday) to move the coaches to move the practice inside, so none of the players are injured. Or not. We shall see. Hopefully we can see a practice before the season's over.

"Who stole my Snickers?"

That's the Tuscola Kid's first-huddle ice-breaker, according to the Austin American-Statesman's Suzanne Halliburton. She uses it to illustrate how he's become the Longhorns' team leader despite being a redshirt freshman. He'll need it to beat the Nebraska Bugeaters today. (Bugeaters was the Cornhuskers first team name, back in the 1800s.) Could be a close game, with the bookies spotting Texas just five points and at least one Austin pundit describing how they might become a two-loss team today. But they won't. Hook Em!

Interesting tidbit from the Austin American-Statesman the other day about Saturday's Texas vs. Nebraska game (ABC, 11 a.m. CDT). They are two of the only four college football programs with at least 800 wins. The other two are Michigan and Notre Dame.

Computer to Texas: Not impressed

The first Bowl Championship Series poll is out and Texas is almost out of the top ten, falling to 9th despite ranking 5th in the human polls. Texas fans are understandably irritated, especially since three other one-loss teams are ranked ahead of the Longhorns, but it's early times with five games to go for the season--still plenty of time to rise, though one wonders if it would be high enough to make Texas a bowl defender of its own 2005 championship.

The Tuscola Kid is coming along nicely, just being ignored because of the chump nature of his recent opponents (with the exception of Oklahoma) but Texas is beginning a hard slog with Nebraska this weekend and winning out should raise its rankings significantly.

Texas vs Baylor

Or, in other words, already looking ahead from today's 6 p.m. tussle with the Bears in Austin to Nebraska. Horns Fan at Burnt Orange Nation says he will "enjoy watching us slam the Bears on the field." And to Missouri, which begins to look like the Longhorns opponent for the Big 12 title, if the Horns win out their season. Right now, even with close games with Nebraska and Oklahoma State, that looks likely from here.

UPDATE  Then the Ags beat Mizzou 25 to 19 and upset this analysis.

Aaron Ross's girlfriend

Texas Longhorns star cornerback Aaron Ross, who picked off the Sooners a record three times in  last week's fourth quarter, hits a lot harder but can't run as fast as his girlfriend. That would be beauty Sanya Richards, an Olympic gold medalist, according to the Austin American-Statesman's sportswriter Suzanne Haliburton. Nice to see that Ross, an all-around nice guy and one athlete whose name doesn't appear on police blotters, is doing so well off as well as on the field.

UPDATE: Then, in 2008, Sanya competed in the Olympics in China, and seems to be doing well.

Texas vs. Sam Houston State

There's a certain amount of embarrassment in Austin about tonight's game (6 p.m. CDT) against weak I-AA Sam Houston State, but it was arranged several years ago, before the Longhorns ascended to the national championship. Next week's game against 16th-ranked Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl will involve a more fitting opponent. All the Horns have to do today is not get their starters injured, and the easiest way to do that? Get out well ahead early and then let the second and third teams take over. At least we may get to see more of backup QB Jevan Snead. Burnt Orange Nation is already looking ahead.

Longhorns vs Iowa State

Not exactly a doormat, but the Cyclones have never beaten Texas in Big 12 conference play, so there's no reason to get excited.

"Burnt Orange Nation rolls out the official prediction...seeing a 30-17 win for the Horns. [ESPN's] Bruce Feldman (subscription required) sees a wider margin of victory, 45-14. He loves the matchup between Texas' wideouts and Iowa State's vulnerable secondary. Elsewhere, CFN sees a 41-16 route from Texas."

At 2:30 p.m. CDT, live from Austin on ABC, and the Texas Longhorns Sports Network (KVET 1300 AM, 98.1 FM) we'll find out.

Meanwhile, enjoy Cedric Golden's take on Longhorn Tony Hills until it disappears behind the firewall.

UPDATE  30 to 14 Horns at the 4:30 p.m. half, but with a long radar line of red and yellow storms moving southeast, all those spectators look to get wet here before the third quarter's over. Game was delayed at 5:15 p.m., with the score 37 to 14, because of all the lightning in the area, but rain hardly touched the stadium even as it poured on other parts of the city. When they resumed about an hour later, both teams held each other off until it ended 37 to 14. Upshot was the offense probably should have put up more points to keep the Bowl Championship Series officials happy since IS is unranked. Some minor injuries on offense and defense.

Longhorns redux

The Horns are favored by a whopping amount over lowly Rice today at 5 p.m. at Reliant Stadium in Houston, despite the drubbing Ohio State gave Texas last Saturday. We'll have a chance to see (ESPN2) the Tuscola Kid again, and maybe his backup, the (Jevan) "Snead in need." If he's needed. Rice has beaten the Horns, but rarely, and not for a long time. I want the Horns to win decisively, but I hope Rice puts up a good fight.

Given that their offensive co-ordinator is none other than my old favorite Horns QB Major Applewhite, Rice certainly will try to fight.

I'll see if I can get my friend, Chuck Adams, a diehard Buckeyes fan in Jacksonville, Florida, to update us on their game. If Colt McCoy (the Tuscola Kid) keeps improving, and the Buckeyes do well, the Horns might just find themselves playing their nemesis again this season.

UPDATE Cincinnatti put points up against the Buckeyes, to lose 37 to 7, and Rice finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter, but losing to the Horns 52 to 7 is hardly a good fight.

The Tuscola Kid

7:05 p.m. We're countin' on you, Colt. Hook Em.

9:00 p.m. HALFTIME: OSU 14, Texas 7

It's a defensive battle so far, like a heavyweight fight. But Troy Smith's experience is showing, while the Tuscola Kid is outclassed through the air and the OSU defense keying on Jamal Charles. Selvin Young is breaking out; best I've ever seen him. Still a chance to pull it out.

9:47 p.m. with 12 minutes left in the game, it's still 17 to 7. The Texas offense just can't make it work. Colt's doing better through the air, but the receivers either can't get it or else they drop it. What a night.

10:03 p.m. with less than 6 minutes to go it's OSU 24 and Texas 7. Good game Buckeye fans. Looks like a lean year ahead for Texas. Hard to win without an offense.

Still like the Kid, though. He'll get better. The question is, will his receivers?

Postcard from Austin

Good, inspiring embedded video of Horns highlights here with on-scene Austin report from Scott Boswell at Dallas Powerhouse who got the video from Burnt Orange Nation. Maybe by the end of the season I'll have figured out how to do this.

The Game III

An old Army buddy, Russell Wheat, who is retired in Canyon Lake, a resort area near San Antonio, is a Longhorns alum and football fan. He predicts the outcome in about 24 hours will be Texas 28 and Ohio State 24.

Russ says tOSU is a good team, but Texas is better; the OSU defense is weak and the Texas team is faster. This is the same score he predicted before last year's first game between Texas and Ohio State--along with some Austin sportwriters--although the actual score was a little less: Texas 25 and Ohio State 22. On the other hand, Russ thought Texas would lose the Rose Bowl back in January, and was pleasantly surprised when they did not.

Texas 28, Ohio State 24. Will it be the heart-stopper last year's game was? We shall certainly see ere long.

The Game II

Latest I saw has Texas favored by 2 points on the betting line. That's not much. Just one less than the outcome last year. Surely Vince is worth more than one point? Meanwhile, Austin hotels are filling up and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is planning for extra flights, chartered and regular carrier, from Columbus, Ohio. Going to be a good game, whoever wins.

UPDATE  Reading ESPN's coverage, I note that tOSU senior QB Troy Smith is praised for his three touchdown passes last week against NIU. Left unsaid is that redshirt freshman (i.e. sophomore) tUT QB Colt McCoy also made three touchdown passes last week against NTS. The ESPN writer has a little fun calling Colt "Opie" for his plainspoken, rural ways, but the Kid from Tuscola is unflappable according to his teammates. Could be he'll emerge as good as, and even better than Smith. Texas was discounted before the Rose Bowl, too, and while no one I've seen is doing exactly that this time, there seems to me a similar need to be more impressed with tOSU as there was with Southern Cal.

Snow cones

Six year olds should never be admonished to hold on to their snow cone real tight. The cup just can't handle the six-year-old grip. Immediately you have a break in the cup lining, usually near the lower extremity, so the grape and blueberry syrup start dribbling onto the floor of the garage and continue into the kitchen and beyond. Other bloggers, such as Dallas Sports Powerhouse, have found one should never put snow cones in a Dixie cup because "the bottoms just can't handle all the [child's] constant straw poking to slurp the last bits," but that might be a University of Texas problem, as it was discovered at last weekend's Longhorns home game. Regular, Northwest Austin snow cone cups are stronger, apparently, for straw poking has never been a noticeable problem. Meanwhile, while we were at the beach at Port A, the snow cone trailer disappeared from the nearby shopping center, so Mr. Boy's snow cone days are over for another year.

Will losing CB Terell Brown hurt?

I don't want to prejudge the arrestees, except to say that having a loaded (!) 9mm in the car with you is mighty thuggish, whatever the excuse of the moment. So TB is out of the game, and that's his problem. Our problem is trying to figure out how bad will that be when the Buckeyes meet the Longhorns on Saturday?

Burnt Orange Nation doesn't seem to think it will be a problem, and they're sticking with their call made back in late July: Texas 30, Ohio State 24.

UPDATE  But Dallas Sports Powerhouse is not so sanguine, as their Scott Boswell came up with this succinct observation after the Longhorns opener:

"Colt McCoy looked good. Snead…not so good. Mack has made the right decision on the QB position. However, McCoy needs to be more careful with his decision making. Not only was he throwing the passes low enough that the receivers had to scoop them, he was throwing in to triple coverage. That isn’t going to fly against Ohio State and could very well cost us the game if not corrected."

Indeed.

UPDATE Brown's dope charge was dropped after he and Gates tested negative for drugs by the football program, but the gun charge remains. Fact that it's a first offense and gun was registered may save them in court, but fact of its being loaded might be problematical. In any case they're out of the game, but late consensus is that shouldn't matter too much.

FINAL  Well, something mattered, in the 24-7 loss, and Brown may have been one thing. Anyway, as of Sept. 13, Brown and Gates were both reinstated on the team, although Brown was still facing the weapons charge.

The Game

I don't know much about Northern Illinois (can't say I ever heard of them, in fact) which Ohio State  handily beat 35-12 on Saturday. But North Texas was a doormat for Texas, rolling over for 56-7, so it wasn't much more than a scrimmage for the post-Vince National Champs. But we learned we do have an offense, as long as new QB Colt McCoy stays healthy--possibly (probably) definitely minus our starting cornerback Tarell Brown. A commenter at the link there says the Longhorns are becoming known as the Bong Horns. Still, if the O line can keep OSU off the Kid from Tuscola, the outcome still looks promising. Four more days and about 19 hours until Saturday's 7 p.m. kickoff.

UPDATE  Mr. Brown was supposed to shadow OSU's Ted Ginn Jr., so he will be missed, even if Colt, who is a redshirt freshman, after all, grows a few years as the evening goes on. Maybe somebody else can catch Mr. Ginn.
