  1. That confusing middle name. Could be … er… confusing.

Heh. As you probably know, having been to Viet Nam as a tourist, in Vietnamese the ch becomes a k sound, so the name is pronounced more like bik.

  2. We have upward of 10,000 Vietnamese in OKC. Not too many of them look like that.

Which is probably how/why she makes a nice living as a model. Also a Miss World contestant this year, I believe.

  4. Thanks for all the pictures of pretty Vietnamese girls. Special thanks for linking to the lovely Vietnamese singer and her songs.

While the old North Vietnam is still pretty much standard Communist gray, the former South Vietnam has prospered since Vietnam opened up to the outside world in the mid-1990s. Saigon is once again “the Paris of the Orient” as it was called under French Colonial rule. And speaking of pretty girls, Vietnam hosted the 2008 Miss Universe contest at Nha Trang in the former South Vietnam. (no joke)

Even more interesting is that Vietnam has been reaching out to the US for closer ties on military matters in order to counter China’s increasing arrogant behavior in the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam. Last year saw the first visit of a US warship, the USS John S. McCain to Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Also in 2010, the chief of staff of the US Army, General Casey visited Vietnam for talks with the Vietnamese chiefs of staff. China is Vietnam’s traditional enemy and China’s growth as a military power worries the Vietnamese, who remember the Chinese ruled Vietnam for a thousand years from 1st Century CE to around 1000 CE. More recently in 1979, the Vietnamese army inflicted a humilating defeat on a Chinese invasion force.
