Tryouts

The baseball tryouts went well this morning, although it seemed kind of odd to be playing baseball before Valentine’s Day. But Mr. Boy and his chums turned out in their old T-ball uniforms for the new season, which will be strictly coach-pitch and probably new teams (requiring new uniforms) selected. Mr. B. got one solid infield hit and a foul tip. He ran smartly to second base. Then he stopped several grounders and had one good, straight throw lofted high enough for the coach to catch standing up. So he came home happy and now we’ll wait to hear which team he’s on. We know he needs an aluminum bat this year. He’s already picked out one with red flames on it.

  1. Great stuff. Could be the next Mickey Mantle ( even though he came from Oklahoma) Eva say being like Pee Wee Reese or Derek Jeter would be better. Eva recommends Derek’s book for Mr Boy.

  2. Several years ago my father-in-law volunteered to purchase a new bat for my nephew. Not knowing much about the sport, he gave me a hundred dollars and told me to let the kid buy his bat of choice. We returned with fine new aluminum in hand. My father-in-law
wanted to know where his change was and I informed him; “change hell you still owe my $25.00” I really thought he was going to have a The Big One. The look on his face PRICELESS!!!

  3. Good grief. $125! I didn’t know they cost that much. No wonder his mother wants to make it a birthday present.

  4. Whew. I am reliably informed that a youth size aluminum bat is about $14.95 at Target.

  5. $125 model has to be a lot better and have more hits in it than a $14.95 bat. Are you sure the cheap one is aluminum. If I remember correctly, I paid about $75 for one about 15 years ago for my son.

  6. They “have more hits” in them? Meaning, at some point, they have no more hits in them? I must say I have always thought making bats out of metal was crap. Even the college teams are talking about going back to wood, since the pros don’t use metal. If he becomes a little league star I might be willing to pay $75 for a baseball bat, but not before.

  7. You could be hindering the next Babe Ruth.

  8. Hmm. It’s a chance we’ll have to take. Meanwhile, my authority on the subject corrects the original price up to $20 at the lowest, with most of the “youth” bats at $40. I still say bring back the wood.
