A northwest passage to the sea

Ice melting in the Arctic has created a long-sought fabled sea route from Europe to Asia across the top of the world. The usual suspects, of course, are blaming global warming. It could be, but I rather doubt it. The record is simply too young to know for certain if this hasn’t happened before. Hopefully, the Seablogger will enlighten us on the subject, once he gets his pitiable personal work completed.

  1. I saw this story but did not blog it because I didn’t have time to dig up related links and put the thing in perspective.
Something is certainly happening with the sea ice in the Arctic. It has shrunk significantly in recent years. I am inclined to blame high-latitude air pollution by Russia.
The change in the Arctic is much greater than other observed changes attributed to global warming. Sea ice is already floating, so its melt has no direct effect on sea level. Open water in the Arctic will increase snowfall in Greenland, and could actually enlarge the icecap there.
Global warming is real enough, but it is not anthropogenic, dangerous, or unusual.

  3. Thanks for the comment, Alan. I’m sure you didn’t have time. Good luck with your issue. I’d leave a comment at your blog about it but I can’t seem to get any posted lately. Perhaps your old software problem is still aggravating?

  5. I have not heard of comment problems for some time. You may have just hit the server at a busy moment.

  8. If so, it happened over and over for days on end. I did not give up easily (;-), but I was becoming paranoid. Have noticed I cannot log-in with WordPress on your site, but can on others with WP, using the same id and password. Whatever that means.
