UPDATE: Russia will "stop" with conditions, including Saakashvili’s resignation. AP says Bush demanded withdrawal and, "hours later" Russian President Dmitri Medvedev ordered a halt. But that’s too simple, not to mention unbelievable. How long will it take for the truth to come out? Not to mention for gluing the Smiley Face back on the bear?

The whole story is pretty murky, I can only say. What did Saakashvili think about when moving troops into Ossetia is difficult to guess. After all the response was expected.
I’m inclined to blame the bear–especially for moving as far into Georgia as he did. I have read that we have about 132 military advisers in Georgia. Wonder to what extent their “advice” has been shaping events? For instance, did the bear get a bloody nose?
