One of the things I like about the Georgian army–in addition to their deployment of a brigade to help us in Iraq–is that they don’t goose step when they march, like the Russian army and, of course, the Nazis before them. They’ve also traded in their AK-47 peasant rifles for precision American M-4s, which they march with at-the-ready. In this stirring video they are seen to be a mixture of the modern and the ancient, and I hope they’re doing well tonight on the battlefield.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Their army is in embryonic state, small and totally inexperienced. Of course, the key word here is “small”. With all my sympathy, they cannot withstand the Russian assault. Hopefully it ends by some kind of managed stand-off, and for sure they lost South Ossetia finally. And Abkhasia too.
Being blooded in Iraq can’t have hurt, embryo or no. Size of 28,000 active, with projected reserve of 100,000, ain’t bad. Russia is big, of course, but had some disadvantages, such as old, poorly-maintained equipment. I expect we will find they did better than the pessimists feared.
For instance, the G’s claim to have shot down ten Russian bombers. The Russians admit to four:

I also noticed American LAWs and Dragons, both anti-tank, in photos of Georgian infantry. So they’ve probably been killing Russian tanks, as well.
Meanwhile, the first C-17 landed yesterday and it seems they will be landing one-a-day for some time. Hopefully bringing weapons along with the humanitarian stuff.
