Tornado Alley active

Rain is good. We’re supposed to be getting more of it this afternoon and into tonight. But there’s also a watch out for tornadoes that could be popping out of the severe thunderstorms. Not good. Fortunately it’s mostly northeast of us.

UPDATE:  The thunderstorms swept through about 10 p.m., leaving behind about a half an inch of rain and some pea-size hail. Fortunately the storms, with wind gusts to sixty mph, were moving pretty fast so were gone in about fifteen minutes. Looks like Oklahoma got the tornadoes.

  1. Have you ever been inside a tornado?
I had seen one on the horizon, while on a train passing through Ohio on my way to Detroit. Scary and beautiful, a classic color combination: yellow-grey skies and a charcoal-black of the tornado cone.

  2. A friend who lives in Kansas said he opened his front door one afternoon and saw one moving towards him. He got his wife and kids into the storm cellar just in time.
I have seen them from a distance, moving away from me across the flat plains of West Texas.
But I think the only people who have been inside them are no longer with us.

  3. Not strictly true, there is at least one guy who got caught in a minivan, made a few rounds in the air with the car and was dropped, remaining alive inside, albeit with a whole long list of broken bones.
I’ve seen the recording of this even, it was unbelievable. At first you are sure that it’s just a piece of debris that is making circles in the air, then they tell you it’s a minivan…

  5. Whoa. If you find a link, send it along. I’d like to see that.
