Early NASA effort

nasaLittle known outside of a select few Civil War buffs was the early Union space program designed to put an abolitionist on the streets of Richmond, if not the moon. Heck, they’d take either one. It was for sure their generals weren’t getting it done. Didn’t work, of course, or history would have recorded it. Uh, maybe.

  1. Ha ha! It was probably too secret to be put on paper…

Accidentally, what is that creature sitting on the cannon? Looks like a crow.

  2. I believe that was the pet vulture of the director (standing at right), an unfortunate choice of bird, as some later said, as it seemed to forecast the death of the program. Or, at least, the abolitionist.

  3. Bad, Dick, Very, Very Bad! (laughing)

  4. It was tough being an abolitionist at any time. Did you know they were, in the late Seventeenth Century, called “barkers.” Something to do, I believe, with a sound they made.
