Let’s get something straight, all you leftie boys and girls. Inconvenient as it may be to Democrat socialists like yourself, Uncle Barry, Aunt Hillary and their cronies, history is history. You can only twist it so far to suit your own fantasies. So calling their free-market conservative and libertarian opponents fascists and Nazis is, at best, ignorant.
Adolph Hitler’s political party, which carried him to power, was called the National Socialist German Workers Party. Yep. These soak-the-rich, anti-business, anti-capitalist Nazis created social health & welfare programs for all Germans considered to be good Aryans. It was an early, racist version of Obamacare.
German Jews, of course, were excluded, along with other such undesirables as gypsies and homosexuals—except, uh, for the homosexuals of the Nazi Party who were smart enough to keep it to themselves, in a sort of early version of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
So when you Democrat socialists (but I repeat myself) insist the Nazis were nasty right-wing conservatives, I don’t merely swoon at your stupidity, I point you to this page at Wikipedia, or this humorous blogger’s post, or, best of all, to buy and read this bestselling book, all of which summarize the shocking truth rather neatly.

Great points. You should always point out that Nazis did not call themselves Nazis, they called themselves socialists and they used the swastika to represent crossed S-letters for their “socialism” (see the work of the historian Dr. Rex Curry). They acquired the stiff-armed gesture from the USA’s Pledge of Allegiance, written by an American socialist, Francis Bellamy. Bellamy wanted “military socialism” to be imposed upon all of society so that all of society would parrot the military. He wanted government to use the schools to spread that socialist dogma. Only the pledge’s gesture has changed to hide its putrid past and its sickening present.
This is a very thorny question that makes most lefties foam. It should be added, however, that as their control over Germany was consolidated, Nazis learned to accommodate big corporations, understanding that they need them to build their war machine.
Possibly they planned to do something about them later, but no one can be sure now.
So let them foam. The anti-Semites among them need their mouths washed out with soap, anyhow.
“Liberal Fascism,” the bestseller at the link, makes this controversy clear and dissects it. But the Nazi welfare state was maintained by high taxes on wealthy individuals and big corporations like Krupp and I.G. Farben—not unlike what Obamaloot wants to do today.
Socialists have to get their money from other people. They have to allow some form of business to create it, though under heavy restriction and taxation.
