Britain’s speech crimes

This is amazing stuff. Wear a nasty tee shirt, go to jail. Make a stupid joke on Facebook, go to jail. Use a politically-incorrect word on your blog, go to jail.

The very concept of speech crime is abhorrent. It’s what you’d expect in Iran, North Korea or Communist China. But Jolly Old England?

The birthplace of John Milton, who famously said: “Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience”?

No more, obviously. One more place to scratch off the tourist list.

  1. In my eyes the problem is that PC is a great hypocrisy. On one hand, a person gets jailed because of a stupid utterance, on the other – people who send the person to jail, say and do much worse things – the only issue is when and how.

So in reality PC becomes the best guide to hide one’s real face behind the acceptable and approved mask.

  2. That’s undoubtedly true. The issue here, though, is laws that allow people to be jailed for “speech” the authorities don’t like. Fortunately we don’t have that problem here. Although Barry’s federal harassment of the producer of the anti-Muslim video is uncomfortably close.
