In which I buy three books

Getting up early can be risky. But it’s what old men do. Our bladders control our sleep cycle, especially when we drink soda or water before bedtime.

Anyhow, this morning I was browsing Amazon and got intrigued by a book, and then another one, and then another one, and, almost… Amazon, so wisely, makes buying so easy. Fortunately, I finally realized what I was doing and stopped. For now. There’s always next time.

  1. Are you off the SF?

  2. By no means. I just like to mix it up. My last SF was Sarah Hoyt’s “Darkship Thieves.” I got bored with it and quit halfway through. And I might add, these new ones I bought were all used. I haven’t lost my mind completely. 😉

  3. Very good. My ‘mixing it up’ attempts are very few these days. I think I’m trying to make up for the decades of no SF.

    • So what do you recommend? I would skip Hoyt, unless you like space opera where the tech is wave-of-the-hand stuff, i.e. no explanation. She also writes a lot of fantasy, most of which I do not care for. The best recent hard SF I read was Gregory Benford’s “The Sunborn,” the sequel to his “The Martian Race.” Both are worth a read.
