End the drug war

The WaPo’s brilliant new hire (at least for the “opinion” pages, though he outshines their lapdog reporters) Radley Balko marshalls the statistics that show the drug war really is a war on the poor and minorities and the excuse for the militarization and corruption of police agencies and politics in general.

Odd that the war didn’t even rate a mention in Ditherton’s SOTU. And him a minority at that. Too realistic, I suppose.

  1. Never to happen, I bet. Maybe the libertarians, if they come to power, but the other two parties will not touch that war. Too many jobs and a lot of money involved…

  2. Well, Gov. Christie of New Jersey says he wants to scrap the drug war altogether. So there’s that. Something’s going to give, I think, and maybe soon.

It’s already started with two states legalizing marijuana use and more expected to join in. “Irish Democracy” already has taken hold in poor neighborhoods used to police raids, according to Balko’s research, and I expect as income classes across the board suffer from heavy-handed and trigger-happy cops, passive resistance and possibly even reduced political donations could spread.

The populace of any country will only take so much. Almost half of registered American voters already don’t bother to vote because they have no faith in or love for the system.
