Rain

No snow, after all. Not even any sleet. Both have dropped out of the forecast. Just rain, and little more than a drizzle, at that. Mr. B. is tre disappointed. Texas boys down here see magic in snow. They see it so seldom in this part of the state. I realize some people would be happy to do without it.

Here comes the snow

It’s official. The weather service has us down for sleet/snow Wednesday through Thursday night with nightly lows overnight tonight through Friday in the low 30s. The odds of it sticking, much less accumulating, are thankfully low. Nevertheless, I’m glad to see that Sol is pumping out spots again. I don’t think I would like another winter like the last two.

UPDATE:  Snow and sleet, briefly removed from the forecast yesterday, is back for tonight (Feb. 10) and tomorrow. Still no accumulation expected.

Computer shopping

I’ve finally had it with my dying audio card, which is unfortunately integrated into the mother board and so can’t be simply replaced. It’s keeping me from using Skype to talk intelligibly to my 90-year-old cousin in Dallas, and also from watching PJTV without annoying stutters.

So I’m shopping for a replacement for my 5-year-old Dell Dimension 3000. So far I like the HP p6300z at about $360 delivered vs the Dell Studio Desktop at about $478. Main difference is the Dell has an Intel chip and the HP has an AMD.

But I’m also addicted to Dells, having never owned anything else. The cheaper HP is a lure, however. I was worried about whether my Outlook Express would make the transition to Windows 7 but that now seems likely with a Belkin Easy Transfer cable. I also have a copy of Word 2002, my old standby, so I’m not worried about accessing my files and continuing to write the books few people ever read. Simply must think it over and decide.

UPDATE:  I bought a Dell, but an Inspiron 546 MT with Win XP on it and a Win 7 upgrade disk for $521 delivered. Also has a low-end AMD chip. Just could not bear to start over again with browser/email and etcetera. Figuring out how to transfer it all should will be hard enough.

Up she rises

The Brazos, that is, according to JDAllen and Bob Dunn, here and here. They ought to know, the river being in their backyards, more or less. I need to drive down off the mountain and see if Shoal Creek is rushing white-water yet.

She gets that way after all the rain we’ve been having. “Like this weather?” the fish man asked me the other day at the H-E-B. Does anybody?, I replied. He said no more. Actually, all this rain will have a good result: the Bluebonnets and other wildflowers should be really good in a few more weeks.

Buy Israel

It’s easy to assume that Austin’s predominant leftist politics preclude things beyond their talking points. Not so when it comes to what the JCAA’s CEO Jay Rubin calls the “buycot” answer to anti-Israel boycotts, and calls for divestment and sanctions:

“Whole Foods has begun carrying delicious Jaffa clementines direct from Israel…  You can support Israel in Austin by buying a crate, encouraging your friends to buy crates and  thanking Whole Foods produce managers for carrying them.

“Of course, H-E-B is no slouch as far as Israeli food products are concerned. Our recent visitors from the Partnership with the Western Galilee were astounded by the selection of Israeli products available at the H-E-B Kosher Store.”

Whole Foods is too pricey and too far away for me, but the H-E-B with the Kosher Store is just a few blocks away. I’m there or in the vicinity about every day.

Cedar Fever is back

I had thought, with all the recent rain, it would have washed the pollen out of the air. But noooo. Doesn’t help that daytime temps are back in the 70s. KVUE’s pollen counters expect high numbers through the end of the month.

Thunderstorms moving in

So far the weather warriors’ radar is all greens and yellows so, hopefully, that artillery-like thunder rumbling through now and then won’t get much worse. We are forecast to get heavy rain overnight, today and tonight, and are under a flash flood watch. Nice that the temp is in the 50s. Won’t be any snow or ice.
