Fred Thompson for president?

"As Republican counsel in the Watergate hearings, he began building a reputation as a straight-shooter. It was he who asked the question that forced a White House deputy to admit that Richard Nixon had secretly recorded his Oval Office conversations."

I still prefer Rudy Giulliani, but Thompson might have an easier time getting the GOP nomination.

Happy trails to you

We are off in the morning to Fort Davis, about a 6-hour drive, via the scenic, Hill Country route and on to Interstate 10 and farther west into the desert. Will visit the old home of the 9th and 10th Cavalry–including the famous black Buffalo Soldiers–when they were hunting Apaches and Commanches, with side trips to Alpine and Marfa. Two of our after dark side trips will be to McDonald Observatory and their visitor center with its nightly telescope tours of the solar system and beyond. Forecast so far is for two clear nights to see the panoply of stars overhead even without a telescope. Hope you have a pleasant week and stay tuned for an update long about Thursday night.

Spring ahead

Hope you remember to set your clocks ahead an hour. Doesn’t look like my PC is going to make it, or maybe it’s set for 1 a.m. There’s a penalty for missing out. Lots of them, actually:

"Not only will Americans have more daylight at their disposal for four additional weeks in the year, but we will also see wide energy saving, less crime, fewer traffic fatalities, more recreation time and increased economic activity. Ultimately, daylight saving just brings a smile to everybody’s faces."

Wow. All that and good humor, too. How can we miss?

UPDATE  The PC made the switch without any help.

Dust masks

This was the year I was going to sell dust masks at South by Southwest. But I forgot. Maybe it’s not too late. It’s the Zilker Park concerts that create the biggest demand, especially after these recent few years of drought. It’s like the Depression-era Panhandle out there, with billows of earth just waiting to fly up your nostrils. Folks come from all over the world to suck up our dust. Get your dust mask here! Where? Um, haven’t decided exactly where yet. The Fat Guy has a funny take on this wheezer, though.

God gets laid

Always glad to see fellow 1968 OCS grad Tucker Smallwood (Contact; Space: Above and Beyond; Return to Eden) get work, and a funny turn. Even when it’s relatively tame material like this Comedy Central piece the other night about a fornicating deity.

Hollywood/television seems to believe that making fun of Judeo-Christianity, conservatives in general and Republicans in particular is just as edgy as all get-out. Real daring stuff, despite the improbability of any retribution. Now if they’d substituted Allah for God…well, that would be real risk-taking with the suicide-belt and pipebomb set. Too real, apparently–for example, here–for the wits at Comedy Central.

Spring ahead early

Spring ahead this Sunday three Sundays earlier than usual. You can thank Congress for the new look to Daylight Saving Time. It begins earlier and will last longer, into November this year. So don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night.

It might be fun to be an hour behind for a few days, but it could lead to trouble. The only good I ever noticed about DST is that it allowed it to be still light out when you came home from work sooner, but the seasons do the same thing later on. We will be ahead of the European Union. Since it was an Energy Act of 2005 that made spring ahead aheader than ever before, it presumably is going to save something or other.

Bluebonnets!

"On this day in 1901, the Texas legislature proclaimed the bluebonnet the state flower. In the 1930s the state began a highway-beautification program that included scattering bluebonnet seed beside roadways, thus extending the flower’s range."

They should be starting to bloom right about now, although it’s been so dry this winter, they might be pretty sparse. Nevertheless, they’re looking tall and hardy in this photo from Big Bend.
