Fisking the AP

Somebody certainly should, as they have strayed so far afield from their old, just-the-facts days.

"All of which means, so far, the Democratic-controlled Congress is not only wasting everyone’s time, but again undermining U.S. troops in the field and aiding the enemy with pointless gestures, while the AP distorts the picture through skewed presentation."

You can’t make this stuff up. Jules Crittenden doesn’t have to. He just takes it off the wire.

AP has no shame

When they crossed the line into commentary, they left the news behind in favor of anti-Bush narrative, as Badger 6 shows in a post about happenings in his area of operations.

Rose buds – not

Winter_Blast.sff_TXSL103_20070115154419.jpg

Everybody’s been picking on the Associated Press lately for faux sources and questionable stories out of Iraq. This is more of a dumb mistake, and I might have to remove it if they complain about me using it here. But as a rose grower I couldn’t resist. The AP’s caption to this photo: "Some early rose buds are coated in ice at the Tyler Rose Garden on Jan. 15, 2007, in Tyler, Texas. (AP Photo/Dr. Scott M. Lieberman)." Poor Dr. Lieberman must have supplied the photo and some dunce at the bureau in Dallas confused rose buds with these rose hips, which are the aftermath of flowering not the precursor. Some people make tea out of them, but nobody can make flowers out of them. Duh.

Bias for all to see

I must admit, at first I didn’t see what the complaint was when LGF and a few others went off on what seemed to me to be this fairly innocuous Associated Press lede on a slow news day:

"The U.S. military announced the deaths of seven American soldiers Tuesday, raising the U.S. death toll since the beginning of the Iraq war to at least 2,978 — five more than the number of people killed in the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S."

Just another in the MSM’s relentless focus on the grim and bloody, I thought. But Meryl Yourish helped put it in perspective for me by rewriting it this way as if it was during World War II:

"Earlier Tuesday, the military also announced the deaths on Monday of three American soldiers. The U.S. military death toll [rose] to at least 2,978, 575 more than the number killed in the Dec. [7], 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor."

Makes little sense that way, unless you are complaining about the reason for the war itself.

Will the real Jamil Hussein please show up

Afterall, the Associated Press has based no less than 61 articles on this fellow, who they say is an Iraqi police captain. Meanwhile, CENTCOM and the Iraqi government deny that he even exists. AP insists he does, but so far hasn’t persuaded him to go talk to either so they might change their tune. And the MSM’s detractors among the blogosphere are having quite a time mocking AP. So will the real Jamil Hussein (assuming he does exist) please show up and put this controversy to rest. Otherwise, the AP has quite a few corrections to issue. Madison dot com weighs in with a fisking of AP’s latest snippy "assurances," to put it kindly.

AP’s bogus sources

Surprises me how far they’ve fallen in five years of war, but with CENTCOM denying and bloggers on their case, it looks like the narrative they’ve been pushing finally caught up with them–in the form of some bogus Iraqi cops who seem more likely to be insurgents spreading lies. Given AP’s reach, however, the lies are already working memes across the rest of the MSM and may be impossible to reclaim.

But the Defense Department is trying, with this rebuttal site which can seem too picky, but ought to be taken seriously as more than just "the government position." It’s unusual, to say the least.

UPDATE  AP is fighting back by reiterating, etc. Austin Bay says an independent investigation is needed, and while you’re at it, revive the National News Council to do it.
