Blocking force

KVET/KASE meteorologist Troy Kimmel sees a "large organized southeastward moving cluster of thunderstorms just southeast of San Antonio is moving into the coastal plains" and theorizes:

"My initial thought would be that this system.. being between us and the gulf moisture coming ashore from the Gulf of Mexico.. will temporarily disrupt the moisture flow and perhaps result in less precipitation for the greater Austin area for at least a part of this afternoon."

So far it seems to be working. Radar shows a lot of the heavy rain well east of La Grange, heading north to Bryan.

Tornado watch

Troy Kimmel alerts us that we are under a tornado watch until 11 p.m., with possibility of large hail and damaging winds, as well:

"Let’s be weather aware as we go through the next six hours or
so…"

Sounds smart, even though it’s been many years since Austin proper received a tornado.

UPDATE  Cancelled with nary a twister, but radar shows big cells moving into San Antone, and others to our northeast.

Dodging thunderstorms

The Muckdogs already were looking at a vicious weekend schedule of three games, two of them makeup games from rain days. Now meteorologist Troy Kimmel emails that it looks like they’ll be dodging more thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon at the opening game of the trio, caused by the conjunction of a rogue Pacific low and a cold front. At least it won’t rain out the Sunday game, which Mr. B. tells me is all important, being as it’s against the Rockhounds. If the Muckdogs beat them, he says, the Muckdogs will be No. 1.
