The starship

The Big E, that is, which left Norfolk on Friday bound for the Med and Persian Gulf region:

"This is Enterprise’s second deployment within the past 14 months.  Big E returned from its most recent  deployment Nov. 18."

Finally, Debka can truthfully say the Enterprise’s Carrier Strike Group 12 is speeding towards the Middle East. What exactly they will do there, along with two other carrier strike groups already there, is anybody’s guess. Hit Iran? Remains to be seen.

Speeding or sitting?

Debka has the USS Enterprise "speeding towards the Persian Gulf." As near as I can tell, it’s still docked in Norfolk, Virginia, unless the Navy is purposely keeping mum about it. That might not be surprising, but it’s managed to leave a virtual ship behind to fool the local news media. They’ve made no mention of "Big E’s" departure.

Orders

My Navy nephew has his orders to report in January to the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as a tactical action officer. He’ll be working below decks in a room like this one coordinating weapons and sensors. Sounds like fun. Not as personal as the infantry, of course, but he will have plenty to do whilst being part of a large weapons platform that also makes a big target. The 45-year-old Big E, BTW, is not named for the starship (although its unofficial nickname is "the starship") but for a WW2 carrier and, going back to 1755, a single masted sailing vessel that fought in the American Revolution.
