What happended in 1948 and the years immediately afterwards is that Israel and the Arab countries essentially swapped roughly the same numbers of people just as India and Pakistan had done in far greater numbers at Partition in 1947. Trouble is that the Arab countries decided to keep their refugees in camps and refused to let them integrate into whatever country’s the refugees ended up in; unless the refugees had enough money to pay the requisted bribes which few did. It is the generations brought up in the camps after more than 60 years that have created the Palestinian people, otherwise they would have been absorbed into Arab society just as the Jews from the Arab countries were absorbed into Israel.
The Arabs were not driven out of Israel as the Jews were driven out of the Arab countries. The Arabs, who later decided to call themselves Palestinians, left the new state of Israel on their own accord, with promises by the invading Arabs that they would return to take over Jewish property. I agree that when the invading Arabs got their asses handed to them by the Jews, the invading Arab dictators turned their backs on the Arabs they had seduced into leaving Israel. Typical Arab perfidy.
