Postcard from Austin

Good, inspiring embedded video of Horns highlights here with on-scene Austin report from Scott Boswell at Dallas Powerhouse who got the video from Burnt Orange Nation. Maybe by the end of the season I’ll have figured out how to do this.

  1. Just a couple quick comments, Dick. First of all, the game isn’t a foregone conclusion. No game ever is. Ohio State realizes the burden of proof lies with its defense. But can the Texas defense stop Smith/Ginn/Gonzalez/Pittman and Co.?
The Ohio State fans’ turnout shouldn’t be too surprising…and distance has nothing to do with it. There are Ohio State grads and fans, in numbers, in most major cities. And Texas and Austin have their fair share. We regularly have a couple hundred Buckeyes at our local gathering place.
As to Ohio State fans, generally speaking, being polite, that likely is because most of those encountered are probably alums. And to me, a two-time Ohio State grad, alums are not good fans. They’re inclined to sit on their hands and keep their mouths shut. I’d much rather be with my group of “Buckeyes,” non-grads who more than likely lived in Ohio but are now in Florida. Many are Navy, but others just happen to be here. And they like to make their feelings known, as do I…
    Go, Bucks!

  2. Nope, the game is not foregone, nor the championship to the loser, as we still have the rest of the season to run.
The local daily has had feature stories on the Buckeye faithful who live hereabouts. There has long been an affinity of sorts between Austin and Ohio. But I suspect your fans are much rowdier. The daily had a bit about the riotous aftermath of a Buckeyes game in Columbus in, I think, 2002, in which nineteen cars were pushed together and torched, and the resulting heat cracked the street. I thought only the frogs burned cars.
Anyhow, enjoy the game, Mr. Adams, at Buffalo Wild Wings, there in Florida. If someone has a laptop with Wi-Fi you would be welcome to blog your side of it via the comments section here.

  3. I’m writing this before I read any of the 21 messages I have waiting in the wings at 11:22 a.m. EST, some of which, I should imagine, have something to do with last night’s Ohio State -Texas game. Since this is my 45th year of watching Buckeye football [I was a freshman in 1961], something I learned a long time ago is you never know what to expect. There will be upsets…and there will be upsets. But, ya know, the sun always comes up the next morning…
The best thing about last night is I lost my voice in a good cause, leading the OH-IO cheers at our Buckeye hangout. And, I hasten to add, there were quite a few Texas fans on hand, likely many Navy personnel on duty here in Jacksonville. They were all fun people, willing to take my occasional barbs about the Texas Horned Frogs/Aggies/yes, I know the nickname.; and also sharing with the Buckeyes on hand the correct meaning of the inverted first and fourth fingers [excluding the thumb], known to the Longhorns’ as “Hook ’em Horns.” Ah, love the Italians version…
I’ve lost my voice/tortured my vocal chords in the past leading the Ohio State cheers, most particularly the 2002 Michigan game leading to the national championship win over Miami in Jan. 2003. That was pre- our sound system days. Now that we have one, brought to the OSU games by a friend, I do have the advantage of a microphone [never met one I didn’t like], but still can lose my voice…
Two keys to last night’s game: the Smith to Ginn TD pass with 16 remaining in the first half, and the receiver I mentioned in my earlier comment about the Ohio State offense: Smith/Ginn/Gonzalez/Pittman. Texas had strong coverage on Ted Ginn Jr., but Anthony Gonzalez finished with eight catches, good for 140-plus yards and the first Buckeye touchdown. And Gonzalez is just a sophomore. Troy Smith is now a graduate student, and Ginn a junior [Will he stay? Hope so.].
The Buckeyes proved last night they’re a good team. Bound for a national championship, the second under Jim Tressel? Only time will tell…
    Go, Bucks!

  4. Sure looks like the Buckeyes are off on a good run for it, Chuck. Texas will start over.
