Dropping the "i" and the "c" at the end of the Democrat Party’s preferred pronunciation and spelling, as Democratic, is an old Republican Party move. It riles the Dems something fierce–who seem to think they have a special right to be considered small ‘d’ democratic–and Bush employed it in his State of the Union speech, whether on purpose or simply out of habit.
"The president’s pronunciation was all the more striking because it was apparently not what Bush was supposed to say. The prepared speech that the White House distributed beforehand retained that precious ‘-ic.’"
Precious? Isn’t that precious.
UPDATE Welcome readers of CBS News blogger Melissa P. McNamara, who linked to this entry this morning, Jan. 31. While you’re here, look around. Although, if you’re expecting a liberal blog, which McNamara indicated this is, you’re going to be disappointed. Except on a few issues, such as gays and abortion, this really isn’t a liberal blog, at all. Rather conservative in most ways.

Maybe the Democrats should start pronouncing “Republican” “Republicant,” as in can’t win the war, can’t catch Osama, can’t balance the budget, can’t rebuild New Orleans, can’t obey the law, etc, etc, etc.
Whoa, that’s clever.
Well, I think what President Bush did was downright reprehensible. “Democratic” is what’s in the speech and that is what he should have said. My dictionary says that means “pertaining to or characterized by the principle of political or social equality for all,” as in, white guys, dark girls, straight people, gay people, all mattering EQUALLY.
Okay, maybe that’s not what that other party stands for.
But it would have been more precise than saying “Democrat” party. I mean, shoot, that sounds like some political hodge-podge of power-brokers who place loyalty to the fiefdom ahead of any overriding principle of ethics…….
……eh, maybe the President knew what he was doing after all.
Hey here’s a question. If the Democrats get to decide we’re all supposed to call them the “Democratic” party, is everyone then required to address the current President as “PRESIDENT Bush”? Does that mean they’re willing to get rid of this “there goes BUSH again” and “did you hear what BUSH did yesterday”? You know, that never did strike me as being particularly respectful. So maybe it’s good we’re having a debate about proper references/salutations. So long as we debate all of it.
They were calling themselves the “Democratic” Party back when they participated in segregating black people, roughing up homosexuals and keeping women barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. So, no, I don’t suppose it has much to do with equality. Far as I can tell they just get mad easy, and are always on the lookout for something to get mad about.
