Playing catch

Mr. Boy’s getting better at throwing, but he still can’t catch worth a darn. He just holds out the glove, rather than watching the ball and moving the glove to it. We’re practicing for his tryouts on Saturday. No more T-ball. It’s going to be coach-pitch this time. Meanwhile, the rain spout on the back of the house is getting the workout. Mr. B. keeps hitting it when he tries to throw to me. Hasn’t dislodged it yet, but he’s knocked some of the paint off the siding. We practice back there so one of his wild throws doesn’t shatter a window.

  1. Practice, practice, practice. I remember throwing pitches and hitting ground balls and flys to my son and daughter until my arms were ready to give out. Both were pretty good. My son making all county in baseball (along with his all-state honors in soccer) and my daughter being the catcher for the softball team. Her first love was soccer but she would give you a pretty good tag on a close play at the plate.

  2. I’m too old and infirm for all that. But an hour after I wrote the post, his catching improved markedly. He’s picking the ball out of the air now and, usually, hanging onto it. Throwing is still wild as often as not. But, hey, he’s still six for three more weeks.

  3. Sounds like a star in the making.

  4. The catching is impressive, for his age, when he remembers to go where the ball goes, instead of waiting for it to come to him. But his throwing is still crazy. He bounced several off the rain spout today and into my shoulder or stomach. Dangerous work.
