Excalibur

The US Army’s XM982 Excalibur precision-guided, extended-range 155mm artillery shell, demonstrated in this part-video, part-animation movie. It was recently used in combat for the first time, in Baghdad, by the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division. Surprise death from above.

  1. If they are not going to use it to ameliorate specific problems, then why bother? A quarter of a million dollars a shot at mickeymouse targets?
For that price, they should be taking out al Sadr, Ahmadinejad, expensive targets.
That’s almost as silly as using a million dollar smart bomb to blow up a truck when you don’t know who is in it.

The Cav used it to hit a specific house in Baghdad that was two miles from the gun. It was used by folks discovered dumping bodies in the river. Much more likely to wipe out the whole block, instead of one house, when using an air-delivered bomb. All this stuff is expensive, and always has been.
