Catastrophe 2007

LCRA is now projecting that Lake Travis will rise to almost 697 feet above mean sea level by tomorrow afternoon, despite having four flood gates open. That would be sixteen feet above full. Have to check but that might be a record height. That’s just from the rain that’s fallen so far. More rain is expected out there tonight.

UPDATE LCRA has closed the lake to recreational boating. City of Austin has, likewise, closed its waterways. Debris, etc.

  1. 697 is still far from record, but it’s been since 1997 since it was that high, where it was at 705. Record is 710 from Christmas Day 1991.

Not living on Lake Travis, I chiefly remember the ’91 flood for what it did to the family sloop. Seemed like every crawling insect for miles around invaded every boat in the marina. We had to take everything out and bug bomb the interior several times. Then clean everything and put it away. What a mess.
