Fly economy when you can

As I’ve said before, I am a jittery air traveler at best. Even before 9/11 and the threat of homicidal Muslims, I found time in the pressurized aluminum sausage harrowing. Now comes advice from an exclusive study of airline accident data, by Popular Mechanics magazine:

"Passengers near the tail of a plane are about 40 percent more likely to survive a crash than those in the first few rows up front."

This makes sense, if you remember the old black joke: the pilots are always the first people at the scene of the crash. Usually the first dead people. So it figures First Class wouldn’t be much safer.

  1. The Chairman of a jury I was on a while back (quite a while, and for quite a while, so I sort of got to know him a bit) was one of the air traffic controllers Reagan fired way back. He got back in the business later on, but still, he refused to fly for many of his years.
    Kind of spooky.

I remember when Reagan fired them. They claimed they were needed for safety’s sake. He decided they were just after more money. In fairness to him, there haven’t been that many crashes since then. But all it takes is one, if you’re on it.

  5. Er… That is my normal train of thoughts when strapping in. Then my brain kinda shuts off as a safety measure.
Yeah, that and the morbid obsession with the “Air crash investigation” series on NG.

When I was a kid, I’d sit by the window and watch everything. Now I get an aisle seat and try to imagine how I’ll get out if there’s time.
