Spring has sprung

Zephrine.JPG

The wildflowers were up and blowing a month or more ago, but this Bourbon, Zephirine Drouhin, has just figured out the season. It’s been in the ground almost five years. So the display should be better than ever. I thought, last year at this time, that it was established enough to produce some summer and fall blooms. But it didn’t. Maybe this year.

  1. Very nice. Who, by the way, invents such names for the flowers?
P.S. I did some “gardening” too lately, some choice results are up now….

Not sure about the name, which seems to be Dutch, but the rose is an early hybrid, a cross between a China rose and a damask on the Ile de Bourbon, an island in the southern Indian Ocean now called Reunion. The Bourbon roses were very popular in mid-19th century Europe. This one is generally said to have been introduced into Western commerce about 1868.
