The Golden Gate baloney

One of the great myths of this country is the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s generally phographed from an angle that makes it look like it’s longer than it really is, and disappearing into a thick fog. Really waaay out there. It’s only when you get up close to it, as this photo shows, and as Mr. B. discovered to his consternation on a recent trip to California, that it’s really not all that impressive. It’s rather stuffed into a small body of water called the Golden Gate. Which is a reminder of another thing. The bridge itself isn’t golden. It’s reddish orange.

  1. Well, I’m the guy who took the photo, and I can say that after driving around here for decades, and seeing the bridge thousands of times, it still surprises and impresses me with its mysterious beauty and presence.
And it is big. I’ve driven and walked it, hiked around and sailed under it, and, sorry to disagree, but it’s big.
Anyway, I hope you liked other aspects of our city!

It’s a very nice photo. It brought to my mind immediately how it looks very different in person from the way it’s usually photographed. It is big. And seeming mysterious seems to be a feature of suspension bridges, as you wonder what is holding them up.

  3. Californians cannot do without some mysterious beauty.
And vegetarian food. But the wine is good, there is no escaping this confession.

It’s a pretty place. I’d like it better, though, if it was more reliably politically conservative.
