Fall ball

The one thing Mr. Boy likes about the resumption of school is the resumption of Little League’s fall season. He has first practice tonight at 6:30, which should end just in time for him to get a bath and go bed. Fall ball is less about competition than improving skills, so that maybe by the spring season he won’t be stuck in right field anymore. We sympathize with the nine-year-old who got booted from the league in New Haven, but Mr. B. agrees that at his age he would not like to have to face a 40 mph pitch.

  1. Mr. B is going to face many 40 mph pitches in his life. Is Mr. B . better off viewing Jericho Scott as something to be avoided or something to be emulated?

  2. Mr. B.’ll probably join the infantry like his ancestors, but he won’t start at eight years old. I’m sorry for Scott, but I can understand the parents, coaches and the league. I wonder if there’d be this much to-do if he was white? Just sayin.
Little League is about having fun, developing skills and promoting the sport. It’s not about terrorrizing the other team, being king of the mound, and developing Nolan Ryans. That comes in Pony League and high school. Also, if Scott just wants to play, why does he have to throw 40 mph? If his mother had any sense of community she’d have talked him into controlling his speed before it came to this.
