Octavia E. Butler

This lady is one great writer and story teller. Such a pity she died so young. Nevertheless I am still happily plowing through her thirteen eleven twelve (confusing bibliography) published novels. I started here, and recently finished this post-apocalyptic one and this fantasy one.

Last night I finished her short story collection, Blood Child, and came away with five favorites out of nine there, including the title tale about species symbiosis and a sympathetic, loving tale of incest. Her deceptively simple prose is enticing, even when the stories are strange. Her genre is science fiction and fantasy, after all. More of the latter than the former, it seems, though that may just be where I am in the trek. Harrowing as some of her tales are, they usually end satisfactorily, even hopefully. Like classic science fiction often does. Give her a try, if you haven’t already. You won’t be sorry.

  1. Thanks, I might. I’ve been looking for book advice, recently.

  2. In that case, I suggest starting with “Parable of the Sower,” or “Kindred.” They’re both representative of what Butler wrote. Wrote. Pity it has to be past tense.

  3. Duly noted. I am into e-books now (oh that HTC widget!), so from a decision to start of reading it’s about 5 minutes (well, and a few bucks if you didn’t find a crack, of course)…

  4. P.S. I am better in the domain of negative advice, so do not buy nor read “Exit Ghost” by Roth. It’s a valuable advice – at list as far as value of my suffering counts…

  5. Butler has a few ebooks at the first link in the post. I have downloaded several by other authors, but have struggled to read them. For some reason I’m addicted to ink on paper.

  6. This is because you are forced to do it sitting near the screen. The screen of my HTC is 5 inch – quite enough, and could be used when I am horizontal (well, almost).

  7. Hmm. Well, I’ve ordered a new Dell Mini 9 netbook. I can read it horizontally. I’ll give it a test. 😉
