I probably ought to file this under Obituaries as it must have been taken before the road was widened a decade or so ago. Once upon a time, say, back in the late 70s, this was a fairly typical scene around Austin–uncluttered, pristine, and pleasant. The rest of the photos here, while certainly interesting, are more up-to-date and representative. Alas.

It was late 1969 when I rode my bicycle up, then down, Mount Bonnell; the north end of the road put me out on 2222, and back then this was way out in the sticks. At the time, I thought it was one of the neatest sights I’d ever seen, even allowing for the fact that it was something like 11:30 pm, therefore I couldn’t see much of anything at all, and besides I was hyperventilating.

I used to drive that route all the time, Mount Bonnell road, I mean, out to 2222 and take a left to go out to the lake. MB road was lined with houses going up, of course, but there was nothing coming down. Now even the “down” part, after you cross the creek near the bottom, is one house after another all the way to 2222. Progress. Money.

It’s a beautiful view, although, to tell you the truth, that purple hue is a bit suspect. I mean, I know what digital cameras are sometimes doing to the color mix. There is another one in that link, called “Austin sunset” that has the same purple offset. I wonder whether it’s real or not.

It is real. Around here it’s referred to as the Violet Crown.
