Will Fort Hood’s dead and wounded get Purple Hearts?

That’s a more loaded question than it may appear. Depends on how you define what happened there. Was it a massacre in the war on terror? Then they get Purple Hearts. Or was it a lone wacko’s criminal act? in which case, they don’t.

  1. If “they” decide to give them purple hearts, they’ll get them. If they decide to give them all a million dollars like they did the 9/11 casualties, they’ll all get a million dollars. Rules don’t mean shit to these guys, Dick.

  2. I figure Barry will split the difference, directing the medals be awarded while still declining to call the perp a terrorist. In that sense, you’re right, JD, the rules won’t matter.

  3. That’s an interesting conundrum.
If they get the Purple Heart, it’s, by definition, in wartime by enemy action, right?
I thought that was the controversy on one of Kerry’s Purple Hearts, it wasn’t enemy action.

  4. It would seem to need to be enemy action by definition. Of course as JD says, rules are made to be broken, especially federal ones.
As for Kerry, I only recall that he got some of his hearts for scratches, which he insisted on claiming because he knew that if he got enough of them (four or five I think it was) the regulations allowed him to go home early. Which he did.

  5. So we should wait for the court to decide then? How long does a military court take usually?

  6. Deciding the question of why isn’t normally within the purview of any court. Only whether, and there seem to be ample witnesses for that.
As for how long, that’s hard to say. They can go fast and they can go slow. Depends on how fast the judge moves.
