Bibi to Obamalot: Return to 1845 borders

“Netanyahu spoke of the injustice and hardship Mexicans have endured since American forces annexed Texas in 1845.

“‘Tens of thousands of ordinary Mexicans were driven out of their homes – the only homes they had known for centuries – and forced to live in poverty and squalor south of the border imposed by American aggression,’ Netanyahu said. ‘The Israeli and Mexican people agree on this: This festering wound will never heal until America takes bold steps to return to the internationally accepted lines of 1845.'”

Nice joke. Hits the spot. I certainly wouldn’t miss California.

  1. Nah… let California do what it’s fated to: gradually succumb to the ocean waves. But not before all my relatives get out.

  2. Well given that the US were the agressors in 1846, please read General Grant’s memoirs, that would have some logic. As George Will once remarked about the territory the US took from Mexico: “We stole it fair and square”. Still although less than 15,000 Americans died in the 1846-1848 War with Mexico, the controversy over wheither slavery would be allowed into the territories we had grabbed lead to the Civil War and more than 620,000 American dead.

There were lots more reasons for the civil war than the territories argument, starting with the radical (even terrorist) abolitionists of New England. Them, and the so-called “free” states (they didn’t allow free blacks to vote or own property) refusing to enforce the federal fugitive slave laws.

The land grab may have been overdoing it, but the war was in response to a decade of Mexican army incursions into Texas, including the invasion after Congress’s vote to make Texas a state. You can just as easily say that the Mexicans brought the war on themselves.
