The Huey

Never occurred to me at the time (1969-70) that the Army would replace these birds with bigger and faster ones. The Huey, or UH-1B, being small, was harder to hit. But, compared to a Blackhawk, it was pokey slow.

  1. No helo is fast enough to outrun a shoulder held missile, unfortunately.

  2. The Hueys outran RPGs most of the time. Some of the Blackhawks still outrun missiles, with chaff and evasive manuevars.

  3. Well, RPG is not a missile, just a rocket without any guidance system. The new-fangled missiles are too clever, even for chaff. Optical images, trajectory management, laser scopes and what not.

  4. They obviously aren’t perfect (or cheap), or helicopters would have been retired by now. Course, as soon as I say that, I recall the US Army continuing to drive Iraq’s mine-laden roads in under-armored Humvees, rather than making the troops walk. Progress, it seems, is not linear.
