Letter to the Presbyterians

We ask you to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in rejecting the counterproductive proposal to selectively divest from certain companies whose products are used by Israel. We feel honored in our hope by the Methodist General Assembly which, after much forethought and debate, decided to oppose such divestment by a 2-1 margin.”

UPDATE:  The Presbies voted down the proposal, but by a much thinner margin than the Meths did. I still say these organizations should lose their tax exemptions, since they’re obviously not just religious groups, but political ones as well.

  1. And they wonder why the main-stream denominations are losing membership hand over fist. I was a member of the United Methodists in Texas, but not so out here in Oregon — for a number of reasons. There are churches here that refuse to include an American flag inside the church, to avoid the appearance of a ‘church & state’ problem, but will back intiatives such as this. Hypocrites.

They ought to lose their tax status for engaging in politics, but that would mean doing it across-the-board, which would undercut a lot of black churches. And we can’t have that.
