Is the drug war nearing an end?

Hey, even the federal government’s hometown, the District of Columbia, has now followed Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska into make pot smoking in private—as well as growing the plants in your home—completely legal.

Can the end of the long, senseless drug war be far away? At least the biggest part of it, which has always been about marijuana, it’s smell and bulk making it the easiest drug to track down? The Mexican drug cartels must be frantic.

  1. Cartels frantic? Nope. They’ve been ramping up their meth output since many states have shut down OTC sources of precursors (with the local mon-and-pop sources now getting involved with identity theft). To take up the slack in marijuana, they’re putting more time into producing higher-grade heroin.

  2. The market for meth and heroin is much, much smaller than for marijuana which is tre popular with people who are much too smart to use addicting meth or heroin.
