Bye, Bye, Bookstores

Borders, it seems, is on the financial ropes. Stuck with stock it can’t unload and, so far, uncompetitive on ebooks. Will they be missed? Says Megan McArdle, not much:

“In the good old days of local bookstores, I frequently went without books that I knew I wanted, because it was such a pain in the butt to order them.  Now if I know I want to read a book, I can do so in short order.  Ultimately, this is a bigger boon than the occasional undiscovered gem–particularly since there are still libraries.”

Like me, she prefers the almost-instant Internet acquisition of a book you know you want via something like the Kindle, something no bookstore can match. Yet. If they want to survive, they’d better figure out how to beat Amazon at its game.

Whoopi Goldberg nude

Please, no. What an awful thought. Yech! But Barbara Walters would be worse. Indubitably.

Auschwitz, the video game, canceled

The, ahem, “game” will not be released this month as planned. What a tragedy.

It doesn’t sound like the tasteless Sonderkommando revenge fantasy, a mod for the moldy 8-bit Wolfenstein 3D, was even very good. Just as well, no doubt.

ROTC should ban the Ivy League

“Banning ROTC at the Ivies is as damaging to the military as banning recruitment at Vassar would be to the NFL.”

Heh.

Little Martian corpse in Aurora

That’s Aurora, Texas, son, also styled “the town that almost was,” population just 1,144 as of two years ago. Northwest of Fort Worth.

The truth of the, uh, space alien depends on to whom you speak. The chamber of commerce, if there is one, will have its confirmation, too, I’m sure. If only by word-of-mouth. Heck, they already have “the world’s talking bird.”

Obamalot to run Texas

The permitting, via the executive branch’s EPA, beginning Jan. 2 that is, “on greenhouse-gas permits for companies seeking to build or upgrade power plants and oil refineries…”

Goodbye strong economy and high employment, hello increases in electric bills and the cost of gasoline—all to “stop” alleged global warming. The state will go to court, of course, but how long will that take and what will be the outcome?

Obamalot loves uncertainty and they’ve got at least two more years to whip it by imposing this and similar unilateral regulations without going through Congress.
