Abby’s Kindle broke, too

Nice to see the 16-year-old sailor attempting to solo circumnavigate the planet is alive and at least semi-well, considering the dismasting of her boat in the rough Southern Indian Ocean. Presume she will be rescued soon by the Aussies.

If she can blog, we can presume she won’t under too much stress waiting. But it would be nice if the saltwater hadn’t corroded the power port on her Kindle way back in April. Or if Jeff Bezos had seen the way clear to deliver her a new one.

Talented Horsewoman

Once I start an L.C. Evans book, I can’t stop, and TH was no exception. The title is a little strange, but the woman it apparently applied to was as congenial as the heroine of the other Evans’ book, “We Interrupt This Date.”

The horse part of the story was interesting (I didn’t know, for instance, that horses were intelligent enough to get bored) but the whodunit, of course, was the guiding force. Talk about misdirection. I thought I had it figured out several times until the surprising ending, making me feel as dumb as the TH thought she was. Nicely done. (I wish this book was available on the Kindle.)

Terry’s Texas Rangers

Lovin’ my Kindle

For various reasons, the Kindle is a lot of fun. Free books is part of it. Not only the classics but the freebies paying publishers sometimes give out to test the waters for the product they will soon put a price tag on.

Such as this popular old Indie scifi tale  soon to be brought back as an Amazon Encore in paper. Meanwhile, the author is offering it free in various ebook formats (including the Kindle) at his website. Cool. You never see this in paper. Nobody could afford to do it.

The Truth Will Never Find Its Way To Your TV

“We con the world, We con the people, We’ll make them all believe the Hamas is Momma Teresa. We’ll make them all believe the IDF is Jack-The-Ripper”

Very funny music video by “Captain Stabbing & Friends” (including Jerusalem Post columnist Caroline Glick.) Hebrew subtitled version here.

Ridicule is the best revenge. Are you listening, Hillary? Barry?

Via Yourish.

UPDATE:  The truth won’t find its way to YouTube anymore either, thanks to Time-Warner (owner of, who else?, CNN) pulling the video for alleged copyright infringement of the song “We Are The World.” However, you can still find it here. So far, anyhow. On the other hand, YouTube still hosts MEMRI.org’s anti-Hamas video. So far.

Civil War reenactors

soldierACW reenactors are an interesting bunch, most often portraying Rebels. Their story is perhaps best told here–despite the author’s ignorance of history and regrettable air of liberal Yankee embarrassment. (It’s said that in Germany, where reenacting also is popular, you have to be Union for two years before you can be a Rebel. Elsewise they’d have no Union reenactors.)

But, wherever they are found, I dislike the Rebel reenactor’s usual odor of unreality. (See above.) Their clothes are too uniform and almost never patched or ragged, much less dirty. Their cap boxes and other accoutrements are too shiny. Moreover, their hair is too short and too clean and their beards (when they have them at all) aren’t scraggly. And, whoa, get this, they all are well shod. T’ain’t realistic t’ all.

UPDATE:  Playing at being Confederates is one thing. Playing at being Union Colored Troops is quite another. The latter are little known and therefore of immense educational value to anyone, whether interested in the war or not.

Knoxville 1863

Continuing the marketing of my battle novel “Knoxville 1863,” I discover that it’s been previewed at Bull Runnings, Pennsylvanian Harry Smeltzer’s popular ACW blog, which is primarily devoted to First Manassas (Bull Run in Union terminology). Thanks, Harry.
