Global warming flops, again

“Before NASA and NOAA start tampering with the data, 2013 is one of the ten coldest years  in the US since 1895, and has had the largest year over year decline on record.”

It has been real tiresome, these cold Novembers and Decembers these past few years. At least we haven’t had an ice storm yet. Maybe that’s next, eh?

UPDATE: When the feds get around to proclaiming 2013 another “warmest year ever,” remember this: “NOAA will [be] reporting something very different, because they subtract up to 1.7 degrees from older temperatures. Essentially all reported US warming is due to a hockey stick of temperature adjustments, which makes the past appear to be much colder than what the thermometers measured at the time. (They of course do not mention this in their press releases.)”

Scientific retractions, sometimes even fraud

Scientists, particularly climate scientists on the global warming, uh, scratch that, climate change, bandwagon, like to smugly point out that their brilliant conclusions are peer-reviewed. Which is supposed to make their critics drop to their knees in awe, shut up and crawl away.

Luckily, there’s Retraction Watch, a blog by two US science writers that’s pulling back the curtain on “peer-review,” by demonstrating again and again that even the most prestigious scientific journals screw up repeatedly, missing honest mistakes and even plain old fraud.

When some of these journals do discover fraud (often from their scientist readers rather than their scientist reviewers), in the form of, say, plagiarism, they do verbal acrobatics to avoid calling it what it is.

When some scientists with multiple retractions recently tried to censor the blog, its software provider WordPress, filed two lawsuits for them seeking damages. Way to go, WordPress!

Ouch

As J.D. says, it’s just a matter of time before some evolution-at-work yo-yo tries this on his own. He gives it three months max. I’d say that’s about right.

The laugher that isn’t funny

The daily (as we used to say in the biz) has “a little fun” with this story of the discovery of a 1950s-60s bomb shelter in the backyard of an Austin-area home. The retired Air Force colonel who had it dug deep into the limestone and outfitted it for weeks of underground living gets ribbed (in the thoughtless modern manner) by the oh-so sophisticated moderns who are so much wiser.

But the colonel knew what he was doing. Ground Zero hereabouts in that time period would have been then-Bergstrom Air Force Base (now Austin’s international airport) because it was a Strategic Air Command base with B-52 bombers loaded with nukes and on standby, ready to fly north and over the pole to Moscow.

Depending on the megatonage of any Russian strike against the base, and whether multiple missiles saturated the area, the shelter could have been vaporized along with much of Austin. If it had survived, it (and the city) would have been under the fallout of radioactive dirt and debris thrown aloft from the base by the explosions and raining down on the area, possibly for days.

That’s all much less likely to happen now. Not because the Rooskies are any more rational than they were then (though they are considerably less armed), but because the tempting target is no more. No more base, no more B-52s and no more nukes. We should be home free. Even the Mullahs are more likely to target the White House or Wall Street than relatively-inconsequential Austin. So our oh-so-sophisticated mockers are free to have all the fun they want.

Obozo’s latest coverup

Nevermind the way unsightly, unreliable and unprofitable “wind farms” are lowering property values and killing bats, eagles and other birds to line the pockets of Obozo’s crony capitalists while he preaches socialism for the rest of us.

His Green Energy sidekicks have long been ignoring the “wind industry’s” flaws. Now they’re playing hush-hush with rising complaints within the federal bureaucracy itself, including at the Pentagon.

Seems massed wind turbines produce false echoes on Doppler radar that interfere with tornado and storm forecasting and even the air traffic radars for commercial and military aircraft—causing flights to be unnecessarily diverted, raising fuel costs and increasing travel time.

First contact

A rare, new bacterium thrives in spacecraft clean rooms (and nowhere else) as far apart as Florida and French Guiana.

They apparently have not yet tried to make contact with their hosts. The only thing we have to worry about so far is the “take me to your leader” part if it involves President Wormtongue.
