Call out the cavalry

Actually, it was the infantry that tamed the West, but that’s another story. The horse soldiers certainly did their share. Hence this reenactment group at Fort Hood where the cav’s rides these days don’t have four legs or require nose bags.

Still my favorite

Happy, Texas, the Town Without A Frown. (They didn’t like the movie, either.) And similar locations ’round about the Lone Star for y’all. (And Bob Wills is still the king.)

Big Steve on space

Physics Nobelist Steven Weinberg–or Big Steve as his graduate students at the University of Texas call him–is down on human spaceflight, particularly NASA’s latest goals of sending humanity to the moon and Mars. Down as in against it. Weinberg, who is quite the Austin party animal, makes some sense on it, at least on not sending anyone to Mars until robots like Spirit and Opportunity have thoroughly explored the place and found all the potentially-interesting sites. He does think it’s worth considering Mars as a Lifeboat for humanity. But he doesn’t consider the moon in this lengthy but worthwhile interview with The Space Review. Possibly because better arguments can be made for sending people there, such as trying to mine oxygen, doing hydroponics for future Mars flights, building a deep space telescope, etc.–and, frankly, just for the hell of it. Be lots cheaper than Mars, too. Anyway, read what Big Steve has to say. Afterall, his field, particle physics, invented the Web you’re enjoying. Just too bad he doesn’t discuss a moon colony.

That UFO deal

OCS buddy Tom Ringwald, who commands a VFW post in Indiana, wants a sit rep on the recent Texas report. My first take: Mass psychosis. I generally don’t do UFOs, but for you Tom… I scrounged around and found the Dallas daily’s take, which seems to be that the publicity has driven so many kooks out of the woodwork that it’s almost impossible to find the truth. But UFON is trying.

The jury jogs on

Houston’s alleged "runaway grand jury" looks to be headed for court itself, at least the foreman and his assistant, to explain to a judge why they should not be held in contempt, etc. The Texas Supreme Court’s arson saga continues.

MORE:  Some of the politics behind the fiasco.

UPDATE:  Then, a judge ruled the grand jury’s term was improperly extended from last fall, invalidating all it did after that and ending its term. Now the only problem seems to be that the Fire Marshall has ruled that the supreme court justice’s house didn’t burn down by accident.

The plot thickens

Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina, free (so far) after his arson-connected indictment was quashed by the DA, now is after the offending grand jury’s foreman and assistant foreman:

"…late Friday, Medina’s attorney, Terry Yates, filed a motion asking for a hearing to determine whether Ryan and Dorrell acted illegally. (If held in contempt, the pair could be fined $500 and given 30 days in jail.)"

The Dems at TPM are having fun with this Texas criminal classic, and why not? This one has room for everybody.

Relief ahead

The rains Friday cleared a lot of the cedar pollen out of the air (despite today’s moderate reading via KVUE above), and the rains forecast for this week, starting Monday, should complete the process. I’m still sneezing occasionally, possibly from pollen drawn into the rancho’s heating system. Normal enough. Another week should do it. Then it’s adios cedar fever for another year. Good riddance.
