The Fart, Barf & Itch Air Force

“The FBI is operating a small air force with scores of low-flying planes across the country carrying video and, at times, cellphone surveillance technology — all hidden behind fictitious companies that are fronts for the government, The Associated Press has learned.

“The planes’ surveillance equipment is generally used without a judge’s approval, and the FBI said the flights are used for specific, ongoing investigations. In a recent 30-day period, the agency flew above more than 30 cities in 11 states across the country, an AP review found.”

Looks like Rand Paul’s battle with the NSA—which I predict he will lose despite his initial victory—is only the beginning. Or maybe not.

Wrestling with a marshmellow

Sometimes journalistic cliches just ricochet off my eyeballs and provoke a titter somewhere below my belly button. To wit this NYTimes revelation of new challenges (boo, hoo) for the drug police:

“Across the country, law enforcement agencies long accustomed to seizures of bagged, smokable marijuana are now wrestling with a surge in marijuana-infused snacks and confections transported illegally across state lines for resale.”

Next up for the SWAT team: raiding kindergarten lunch bags. In the schools which still allow confections. As opposed to the ones requiring Mooch’s carrot sticks.

A new marijuana blog

And it’s not just because of all the states and cities legalizing its use. No, the new Cannabis Law Prof Blog is more about enforcement of the drug laws (particularly the federal ones) still banning its use, sale, etc.

For reasons such as these details from a 2013 report by the American Civil Liberties Union:

“The report finds that between 2001 and 2010, there were over 8 million marijuana arrests in the United States, 88% of which were for possession. Marijuana arrests have increased between 2001 and 2010 and now account for over half (52%) of all drug arrests in the United States, and marijuana possession arrests account for nearly half (46%) of all drug arrests.”

Smokers are easy to catch, allowing the drug police plenty of leisure while still  making their quotas. And the arrests fall disproportionately on blacks, though their use is about on a par with whites. Maybe more blacks spend more time on the street where the cops can see them toking.

“Such racial disparities in marijuana possession arrests exist in all regions of the country, in counties large and small, urban and rural, wealthy and poor, and with large and small Black populations. Indeed, in over 96% of counties with more than 30,000 people in which at least 2% of the residents are Black, Blacks are arrested at higher rates than whites for marijuana possession.”

That the new blog is edited by a law professor at Texas A&M University is also a plus. Gig ’em, Ags. 😉

Prevent, treat cancers with weed?

“Today, scientists are examining some 50 different varieties of the plant produced in Israel, and studying its effects on some 200 different types of cancer cells….’There is a large body of scientific data which indicates that cannabinoids specifically inhibit cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death,’ explained Meiri….

“From 1850 through 1937 cannabis – which has over 400 active ingredients – was used as a medicinal herb and was accepted in conventional medicine. Before that it was used in many cultures for thousands of years, such as in Chinese medicine, in which it is used to treat over 100 illnesses.”

But forget the high. Researchers are giving it in pill form, not joint by joint. Alas.

Willie’s Reserve: Better late than never

He had to wait until he was 81 years old, but famed all-day toker Willie Nelson finally will offer Willie’s Reserve, his own brand of legal marijuana—at least in those states where it’s legal to sell it for recreational use.

Which, IIRC*, so far is only Colorado. The others, including D.C., allow you to grow your own but not to buy or sell it. He might be better off selling grow lights and how-to books.

UPDATE: *Okay, I’m wrong. Only D.C. requires you to grow but not to sell or buy it. You can buy or sell it for recreational use in Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska and at least a couple of cities in Maine. Go for it, Willie!

Mama, let your babies grow up to be feds

I’ve been telling Mr. Boy to consider becoming an electrician. He could take the college money, buy all his tools new and a new truck. Then, with plenty left-over for most of the price of a nice house in a high-demand neighborhood, he could get out there and make big bucks from the well-educated who are fearful of electricity.

But I’m wrong. Dead wrong. What he needs to do is to become a fed. That’s right a federal employee. Because that is where the big bucks really are, folks, up to twice six figures a year. Likely for doing no more than surfing porn on the Net half the day. And even when a fed is caught violating the law, she still gets a fat bonus.

Is the drug war nearing an end?

Hey, even the federal government’s hometown, the District of Columbia, has now followed Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska into make pot smoking in private—as well as growing the plants in your home—completely legal.

Can the end of the long, senseless drug war be far away? At least the biggest part of it, which has always been about marijuana, it’s smell and bulk making it the easiest drug to track down? The Mexican drug cartels must be frantic.
