Da 5 Bloods

I don’t have any use for Spike Lee’s politics, but I have liked some of his movies. She’s Gotta Have It, for instance, his first one, which was a comedy.

Da 5 Bloods, however, a drama of a return to Vietnam by four black combat veterans now in their sixties, pretty much left me cold. Not just because of the politics (the one Trump supporter is PTSD crazy and gets it in the end, presumably for his sin of voting the wrong way) but by the way the veterans on their return to the country decades after the conflict ended keep attracting angry Vietnamese who lost kin in the American war. Including at My Lai. What are the odds? Pretty high if you’ve got to bash America to keep your bona fides with your leftist Hollywood pals.

Strange anomalies abound: an infantry officer’s uniform supposedly standing in for their dead squad leader’s, who would have been an E-5 at best. Probably Lee didn’t care to get it right. Any old uniform would do for the immoral war. And the sound track. Ride of the Valkyries? It crescendos when there is gunfire, both in the past and the present. Cheap, I guess, being public domain.

None of the four actors are Denzel Washington handsome so it’s a little disconcerting when one meets his old Vietnamese lover (who hasn’t aged much) and discovers THEIR beautiful daughter.

Of course they went back to find the squad leader’s remains, which they do almost too easily—and millions of dollars in buried gold bars, which it seems every Vietnamese wants a piece of. Hence the gun battles to satisfy the Hollywood soul. They may be against guns for the rest of us but they never miss a chance to use one or more in their movies.

And Lee has to politic it up, race-wise, mainly by claiming blacks were disproportionately in combat as opposed to whites. You can take that claim however you like it. You certainly can Google some statistics to back it up, whether they’re true or not. But Lee doesn’t really seem interested in truth, in Da 5 Bloods.

After all the riots and looting led by anti-Jewish Black Lives Matter over felon armed robber George Floyd, Lee’ll probably win an Oscar. And laugh all the way to the bank.

Gumdrop Milley

When Gen. Milley apologized for his appearance with the president, he wasn’t kidding. A human gumdrop in battle rattle. This paper soldier needs to lose about a hundred pounds. Hit the track, Jack!

1968 deja vu

Pentagon officials, the Secdef and even some retired generals are fussing about using active-duty troops to put down rioting, burnings and looting.

Back in 1968, when the race riots after Dr. King’s murder were much worse than what the George Floyd protests have spawned, we in the active-duty Sixth Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Meade, Maryland, were training to put down riots in Baltimore and DC. We were never called.

In early 1969, we spent all day at the DC Guard armory, with rifles, pistols and bayonets, waiting to be called to protect President Nixon’s inauguration. No retired generals were fussing about it then that we ever heard. It turned out we were not needed. But we were ready to go if we were.

Of course, in those days, the National Guard was full of insubordinate draft-dodgers and pretty useless. Today’s Guard is full of combat veterans. And, in 1968, the press wasn’t as adversarial as it has been since President Trump was elected and retired generals weren’t as outspoken against the commander-in-chief. It’s unlikely the 1968 press would have given them much publicity if they were. Today, every anti-Trumper is a hero to the Leftist news media. And the Pentagon knows it has a competent Guard.

Kneeling cops, guard

They look pathetic, the cops and soldiers (all guard) who let themselves be cajoled by the protesters into kneeling before the mob. Grinning like the fools they are. Worse even than the crying police chiefs.

All it produced in NYC was a stabbed cop and two more shot. Not much thanks for the Dimocrat mayor leaving the looters to their destructive partying. Even aging Curtis Sliwa and his Guardian Angels tried to stop the looting the city cops are ignoring. And got bloodied for his trouble.

The Z man says aging whites, who remember 1968’s riots, are likely to turn out for Trump in November because they appreciate both his conciliatory words for the protesters, especially the blacks who aren’t looting, and promises of law and order for the rioters.

He got it in DC, finally, after elements of the 82nd Airborne, elite paratroopers who are perpetually on standby and training for just such events as rioting, burning and looting, took the streets back.

Even as his idiot secretary of defense, two days later, decried using active-duty troops for riot control. The Trumpster is not happy with the Secdef.

Nor should he be.

Veterans Parking

Pulled into Lowe’s the other morning to buy an extra ceiling fan to replace one that’s caving after about sixteen years of faithful service. Started down the parking aisle when I spotted two signs at two spots at the front.

“Veterans Parking Only,” they read, “Thank you for your service.” A waving American flag topped the signs.

Probably meant for new veterans of the Middle East, I thought, not old farts from Viet Nam like me. Still, I’m a genuine veteran, so I parked in one of the two empty spots. All set to whip out my VA card should it become necessary. It didn’t.

Thanks Lowe’s!

Trump was not ‘mercurial’ on Syria

The Fake News would have us believe that Trump’s pullout was not principled, a long-overdue battle with the permanent war. No, it was only a whim made after a phone conversation with the Turkish dictator. Their usual drama bullshit.

“The claim by Trump advisors that they were taken by surprise was indeed disingenuous. What happened last week was that Trump followed up on the clear policy he had laid down in April….

“Trump is now well aware that it is virtually impossible to carry out the foreign policy that he wants without advisors who are committed to the same objective…he must find people who have remained outside the system during the permanent war years while being highly critical of its whole ideology and culture…[then] the last two years of this term in office could decisively clip the wings of the bureaucrats and generals who have created the permanent war state we find ourselves in today.”

Trump in Da Nang

On Veteran’s Day, no less, although it wasn’t his planning. Note Reuters calls it “the Vietnamese resort city of Da Nang.” Nice
