Mind-bending

A mind-bending timelapse video with the sky stabilized with a star-tracker shows the Earth spinning through space.

UT: Water from air

Mechanical engineering researchers have developed a gel material that when heated draws water from humidified air and releases it as water vapor which can be collected for drinking or agriculture purposes. Sounds like it could be the answer for people in dry areas, so long as there is at least 15 percent humidity. Neat stuff.

Gas prices

Are headed to $10 a gallon. That will hurt many. What will hurt all of us is when the price of diesel hits $10 a gallon. Everything moves by train or truck.

UPDATE: Diesel is $9.19 a gallon in L.A. Hold onto your hats! Via James Woods on Twitter.

Consequences of service

OCS classmate Tucker Smallwood: “This is a link to a short film, which addresses PTSD and veteran suicide.  Two concerns very dear to my heart.
“The intent of this film (Proof of Concept) is to generate sufficient funding to produce a full length feature film.
“The treatment program described within it (ALL THE WAY HOME) I conceived in 2009.  I am still trying to generate a pilot that could encourage similar satellite efforts across America.”

Living with disgrace

The massacre story keeps changing and the Uvalde cops are getting death threats. While the apparent boss of bosses, the school district “chief” of police (all three of them, reportedly), is hiding at home being guarded by the city cops. All of whom have reportedly stopped cooperating with the state’s investigation of what and why and how. Small towns are so intriguing. And we still don’t know the name of the Border Patrol guy who killed the killer. And may never.

Cataract windup

Met with the surgeon the other day who said everything looks good with my eyes and I can proceed to get new glasses. Ordered a regular prescription pair and prescription sunglasses for a whopping total of $2,000. How much of that is inflation? Will see the surgeon again a year from now. Meanwhile, Barbara Ellen will start with her cataract eye exams in a couple of weeks.

UPDATE: She passed. No cataracts. Just needs new glasses.
