HIV: the forgotten U.S. pandemic

AIDS, of course. It was the panic of the ’80s, brought under control by drugs in the 90s and faded from sight in the aughts. Except in Africa. Who knew D.C.’s HIV infection rate challenges that of three African countries?

“The current prevalence of HIV infection within certain subpopulations actually challenges rates observed in areas of Africa. Think about it for a moment. The incidence of HIV-infected adults in Washington, D.C. (one in 30) is actually higher than reported numbers for Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Rwanda.”

Right in the feds’ backyard. How come the pols never talk about it anymore?

The disappearing teddy

Cool time-lapse (called snow-lapse) photography here during the previous D.C. blizzard. The advancing one could be worse. But the teddy already is a soggy mess.

Big snow

Can’t say I’d mind seeing D.C. buried by a blizzard for a while, so long as Veeshir has a full pantry and keeps his power. Serves the home of hot air right. Can you say Cap & Trade?

I worry more about Mr. B.’s godfather, Richard Torovsky, at the Reveille Vineyards in the rural Shenandoah. Been snowing heavy all day out there, he said on the landline a few minutes ago, and is still coming down hard tonight. More is expected tomorrow. The  snow is not up to his porch yet but it’s wet snow and it packs like concrete. Fortunately, he has a 4-ton, 4-wheel drive tractor to get around on.

Tea Party D.C.

Boy, that Barry can sure bring out a crowd. This one seems not to share his "spread the wealth" ideas, however.

UPDATE:  Apparently CNN is estimating two million folks. Other American Big Media is merely saying "thousands." Funny how, when they’re not sympathetic, they lose the ability to estimate. Fortunately, there is the foreign media. This time-lapse video shows the crowd form and flow to the Capitol.

Nuking D.C.

The Seablogger points to his own and some other recent posts on the logic of Al Q eventually setting off a nuke in D.C. Seems right to me, especially since they have a history of second tries on missed targets and they pretty much failed on their first big D.C. strike in 2001. On the other hand, does the sea-attack "commando" assault on Mumbai, India, not portend a similar strike on the ports of Miami, Boston or San Francisco?

UPDATE:  The Jews and Israelis taken hostage in Mumbai were tortured before they were slain.

MORE:  More, nonspecific, support for the nuke idea. But the report’s lack of specificity regarding the "terrorists" is pathetic.
