Giuliani is running, but…

Liberal on abortion and gay marriage, but conservative on government policy, Rudy ought to be nominated because he can be elected, says Steven Malanga in City Journal:

"Far from being a liberal, he ran New York with a conservative’s priorities: government exists above all to keep people safe in their homes and in the streets, he said, not to redistribute income, run a welfare state, or perform social engineering. The private economy, not government, creates opportunity, he argued; government should just deliver basic services well and then get out of the private sector’s way."

If only the Repubs have the sense to nominate him. So far, it doesn’t look like they do.

White lines and dead armadillos

That’s what onetime Texas ag commissioner Jim Hightower says are in the middle of the road. But fav columnist Peggy Noonan says the center is where the Reps and Dems need to be, especially the Dems.

"Can they go down the center, or will radicalism of various sorts erupt and gain sway? No one knows. The Democrats don’t know. The answer is going to help shape America’s future political history. And it will help shape George Bush’s. If the Democrats are radical, he will look more reasonable, not only in the eyes of the public but of history."

The Hightower wing prefers radicalism to imitating armadillos. But at the expense of elevating Bush?

Never forget

The recent discovery in New York City of human remains–some as large as arm or leg bones–found at the site of the 11 September attacks is a ghostly reminder of why we are where we are today, with a looming mid-term election which could change the course of the war begun on 12 September.

The Democrats are pummelling the Republicans for running political ads referring to the 5-year-old attacks, contending the R’s are sleazy to make political points off tragedy, but of course they would do it too, given the chance to govern again. How could any party in good conscience not mention the threat and seek to meet it? The human remains at ground zero remind us what’s important.
