Series to game 7

In the end, it came down to the Rangers oldest problem: their bullpen. They were scraping the bottom of their pitching barrel when the Cardinals pulled out the win in the 11th inning.

And even after putting in Derek Holland as a reliever and Josh “Hambone” Hamilton hitting his first home run in 82 at-bats to put them ahead by two in the 10th. So impressive that one. Pity it just wasn’t enough. But it could be the portent the Rangers need to win it all tonight. Wait and see.

UPDATE:  It wasn’t and they lost their second shot at the series in as many years, 6-2. But the odds are they’ll be back for another try in 2012.

Rangers in six

That’s my considered prediction for the Series which starts tonight. The Cardinals are just too good not to win a few. Scott agrees, though his hedging is all over the block, nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockers. I’ll be happiest if the Boys from Arlington take tonight’s game. More on the update.

UPDATE: Rangers in seven? It was a shock, the TR’s 3-2 loss, mainly because their biggest bats were silent. “Power Outage,” said the Boston Globe. It was that. Hope it was the cold—Elvis Andrus was wearing earmuffs. Are we in for another lost Series? Wait and see.

Way to go, Rangers!

ron-washington1-e1287063781612Mrs. Charm had it right: “Who would have believed it?”

The Rangers (managed by the inimitable, minor-league veteran Ron Washington, at left) won the sixth game 6-1 over the Yankees, thanks to the strong pitching of starter Colby Lewis, and their usual hot bats.

They now advance to the World Series! Hot dog.

UPDATE:  Lifetime, dedicated Rangers fan Scott Chaffin at The Fat Guy has a good wrap of the season, especially on Ron “Wash” Washington:

“But, somehow, someway, it worked out, and I think we stats-focused nerds are seeing how bloody important it is to have someone who knows how to corral the egos in the fabled ‘room’ with something that isn’t measurable out to five significant digits. Because I don’t think you get here without the language-mangling, chicken-dancing, Winston-smoking Ron Washington.”

Let’s go Rangers, let’s go

One more win and the stRangers are going to the World Series! After tonight’s 10-3 performance, they lead the Wankies 3 games to 1. Like Mr. B.’s T-ball team, the Rangers, years ago would cheer their batters: “Let’s go Rangers, let’s go. Uh. Uh.”

Or, as Manager Ron Washington sez, “Drop the antlers on ’em. Drop the claw.”

Cards win the series

"Favored by few, the St. Louis Cardinals used an unlikely cast of characters to win their first World Series in nearly a quarter century. Jeff Weaver dominated, David Eckstein drove in two runs on balls that didn’t leave the infield and the Cards took advantage of another wild throw by a Tigers pitcher to beat Detroit 4-2 on Friday night and won the Series in five games."

Tom Higdon, an old Army buddy who lives near St. Louis, will be celebrating this weekend.
