Hummer time

Not a reference to the overpriced, oversized urban assault vehicle, but the little, frenetic hummingbird. We’re seeing a lot more now that it’s cooled off some than back during the big heat wave. JD invested in a red feeder you fill with sugar water. We used to do that, until the yellowjackets made a mess of it. Now we just let the Turk’s Cap and the Plumbago get bushy. They attract all the Ruby-Throats we need.

  1. I had a little problem with wasps, too, but it has eased up some, since I discovered how much fun it is to get drunk and pick them off with a BB gun on the wing…

  2. I don’t think I could hit a yellowjacket with a BB. But it would be fun to try.

  3. Got a nest of wasps in the backyard recently. Unnerving.

  4. I used to just hit them with the air blast. But I lived near houses, even if I hit it I would have busted a window somewhere.

  5. Of course you know that I might have been exaggerating a tad…

  6. That did occur to me, yes. Still an inspiration, however.
