Who, as opposed to what, gets on the plane

The El Al security system is far less intrusive than the TSA one (there is no groin grope or X-Ray machine), and it works just fine.

Because, unlike the feds, El Al is not concerned with political correctness, only safety.

Michael Totten, who gets profiled every time he flies through Tel Aviv, explains how Israel does it:

By eschewing the “Security Theater” approach, which is to always fight the last “war,” i.e. remove your shoes, bring no shampoo, let them grope your underwear, etc.

Despite that Al Q never strikes the same way twice, the Feds always do.

(I’m hoping to experience the Israeli Way when I fly to Tel Aviv in the spring.)

Meanwhile, Thomas Sowell sees more of Obamalot’s disdain for America here:

“If anything good comes out of the airport ‘security’ outrages, it may be in opening the eyes of more people to the utter contempt that this administration has for the American people.”

Still more from Instapundit, who thinks the flying public’s anger over TSA’s groin grope is far from over.

Because, for one thing, Obamalot is considering exempting Muslim women.

UPDATE:  Meanwhile, the federal bigs are breezing right on through. No scan or grope for them. And no surprise, either.

  1. Dick, I realize that you and your fellow Conservatives are determined to defeat Obama no matter what, but you might consider that just maybe some of Obama’s enemies, such as terrorists, are your enemies as well. As for the TSA policies reflecting supposed contempt of the American people by Obama, this is simply ridiculous. I remind you that it was under the administration of your fellow Texan that the TSA made us take off our shoes after the failed shoe bomber, Richard Reid.

The Israeli style of asking questions and treating every dark-complexioned person as a potential terrorist is likely to prove even less popular in the US than the current pat downs are, especially since the Israeli style would have to apply to everyone, not just those who look like they might be an Arab or Muslim. Also the time delay involved would simply prove ruinous economically for the air lines.

    • On the contrary, David, Obama is defeating himself, as the historic losses in the past House election adequately prove. And this:

I’m just commenting on it. Read Sowell’s piece at the link (don’t just react to my comment) and you’ll find a summary of Obamalot’s contempt in action.

As for the shoe removal, well, it’s a funny thing the way Repub executives have so little control over the primarily-Democrat permanent bureaucracy. Witness the State Department’s initial refusal to go along with Bush II’s Iraq policy.

The bureaucracy is the aircraft carrier that can never turn quickly, but only a Democrat executive has a chance to make it start the turn in the first place. But Big Sis, as Drudge calls Napalitano, isn’t inclined to turns.

  2. Oh boy, you two fight it out everywhere, it looks like 😉

Anyway, I wanted to say that

    a) the newspaper description of Israeli method is of necessity incomplete and makes it look like a 100% profiling, which is untrue.

    b) the Israeli methodology could be impossible to implement in US (for example), due to incomparable passenger volume and related expenses – both in training and equipment.

    c) As it is know, Israeli system is far from ideal too, and frequently punishes the innocent:

  3. The American system, obviously, also punishes the innocent. Every single day. With some imagination, the best parts of the Israeli system could be incorporated into the American one.

Which is going to have to lose the groin grope and, possibly, the X-rays, as well, or see more Democrats lose their political jobs. Hmm. That might not be a bad idea.

As for David, I keep telling him he needs his own blog where he can use to best advantage his liberal Democrat opinions on Obama, Fox News, Sarah Palin, and those awful Conservatives (capital C) that he finds so distressing. I welcome his comments here, but he has to expect a comeback when I disagree with them.

  4. Dick, I do not mind the comebacks. It is part of posting. Snoopy, yes Dick and I fight a lot and we are not even married! Just think of us as Salt and Pepper. Remember Snoopy, if it had not been for Simply Jews, Dick and I probably would never have met!

Seriously: Snoopy thanks for your post pointing out why adopating the Israeli system in the US would not work. Also linking to that story about how Israeli security screwed up and treated a visitor with unnecessary hostility and suspicion. I am sure some parts of the Israeli system can be adopated and used successfully by the US and other countries. It is just a matter of figuring out what parts.

Apparently today’s planned protests at US airports have fizzled out. “Protests don’t take off at Nation’s Airports” at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/24/national/main7085692.shtml?tag=stack

Happy Thanksgiving to Dick and my fellow Americans.
Happy Thursday to Snoopy and everyone else.

See you on the flip side.

  5. Here’s Instapundit Glen Reynolds on the Israeli system. It really isn’t profiling:

“Israeli Arabs can breeze through security, while Americans with odd stamps on their passports—as globe-hopping correspondent Michael Totten recently noted—face extensive questioning. The Israelis focus on the person, looking for signs of nervousness, stories that don’t hang together and other evidence of nefarious intent.”

Or we could take the Archie Bunker approach: Hand a gun to everyone who gets on the plane so the terrorists are outnumbered.

Actually, I think the groping will stop. The X-ray scanners probably will stay, and people will just have to factor in how many rads they can stand each year by flying.
