With trick-or-treat falling on a Friday this year, we’re expecting an overflow crowd ringing the doorbell at the Rancho tonight. Unfortunately, I won’t have my usual candy give-out helper, as Mr.B. will spend the night with friends at their house.
The costumed little ones and their proud parents are always a treat and I hesitate not to be generous with them. It’s the tall teenagers and near-adults who’ll wear just a funny hat or a grotesque mask we’re more inclined to think of as a trick. So when it’s bedtime for the little ones we’ll probably turn the porch lights off.
UPDATE: Too chilly (temps in the low 60s) for the candy-mongers. Only drew five altogether—fifth through seventh graders—before I cut off the porch lights. None were little ones, alas.

I expect no visitors, as usual, though I’m prepared for some. Meaning I have some candies.
Well, I will be re-reading a few Bradbury stories. To keep current 😉
What, no costumed candy-seekers in your neighborhood? Got their fill at Purim? Was reading a column in ToI last night whose author was incredulous that his observant Jerusalem friends do Halloween. He said it was a more Christian holiday than Christmas, though I think that’s mainly if you’re Catholic.
No, we used to have a few dropping by, but no more. Right across the street from our house is the “Old 300” cemetery. Graves from the early 1800’s, big live oaks and pecans with Spanish moss hanging down, etc. I guess it’s too spooky for the little kids. And our house is old, old… and I guess I’m pretty spooky, too.
I wish I could look spooky enough to frighten the teenage vampires from the public garden across the street. The noise some nights is unbearable. Cops don’t want to waste their valuable donut time (well, pita time here, I guess) on noisy cubs, and the municipal security boys are as slow as snails…
Yeah, I bet the graveyard is keeping them away. It’s fun to play with the idea of death, not so much fun to confront it head-on, especially under Spanish moss.
As for the garden (I presume you mean the playground beside the grocery?) see if you can get a few railroad smudge pots and light them and put them over there some afternoon. The smell alone should drive them away, not to mention the smoke.
