We haven’t traveled much since 2019. So I haven’t experienced one of the new big-city barbeque joints. When I was traveling, I’d prefer small-town Lockhart, or anyplace close by. Preferred avoiding Dallas-Fort Worth and, certainly, Houston, for the godawful traffic. An old favorite from my traveling reporter days back in the 80s was a joint run by a host of black women from a nearby Methodist-Episcopal church, I believe it was. Just east of Hempstead, northwest of Houston. Nowadays we hardly ever go out but order delivered, usually from Bert’s or Terry Black’s. They didn’t make the list, but their meat is tender and juicy without sauce and that’s the ticket. I hear I’m going to get some on Father’s Day, if I behave myself.
