Youth at war

plane67a

These are some of the kids who flew the B-29s over the Pacific that napalmed, firebombed and finally nuked Japan into submission. Just in case you may have doubted that they could ever have been so young. Note the babyfaced one in sunglasses. My then twenty-two-year-old father flew B-29s in training in Kansas and Oklahoma but he didn’t go on to the Pacific.

  1. My son is 22 and he looks like the third guy from the left, standing…

  2. The one kneeling in front of him sort of looks like my dad at that age. These kids and their plane made it home–even after having an outboard engine blown off on one mission. A B-29 by the same name but with a different crew crashed in the sea. This one is No. 2.

  3. This is a great document.

Many more such pictures at the link. The site was put together by the son of a B-29 pilot in the outfit, the 6th Bomb Group. Note the signs on the front wheels: “Hot guns, bombs loaded.” She was all set to go.
